In the final race before the closing stretch of the cross country season, Greencastle hosted the Tiger Cub Invitational Saturday morning at the Putnam County Fairgrounds.

With five of the six West Central Conference schools competing in the high school race, the day had a feel of a conference preview meet, one in which the hosts were well ahead of their local rivals and won both the boys and girls meets.

Greencastle head coach Gary Anderson said that both squads were beginning to compete well with other squads and each other.

"We got some good responses from our kids today," Anderson said. "They're starting to close the gap between the first and the fifth runner. They're always getting better."

Cloverdale head coach Andy Tyler said that the course presented challenges to the squad but was a good challenge for the squad.

"We did OK today," Tyler said. "We had a few mishaps on the course today. There were a couple of guys who tweaked their knees and some girls who suffered leg cramps but the effort was there today."

North Putnam head coach Kevin Lutes said that those who made the short trip to Greencastle had fine efforts.

"I was proud of the runs the kids had today," Lutes said. "We had a lot of runners out sick but the group as a whole did really well. Our seniors had good races today. Chase Salyers ran 22 (minutes) flat and Alexandria Land came in at 27:21.

"Because the course was so different, it took the kids awhile to get used to it but they did alright in the end."

Greencastle cruised to a win in the girls' race, taking five of the top nine spots to finish with 25 points. Bloomfield pipped Northview to second by a point with Monrovia finishing fourth. Cloverdale and North Putnam did not have team scores.

Corrie Romer finished second to lead the Tiger Cubs, followed by Brittany Love in fourth, Sammy Haynes in fifth, Megan Haynes in sixth and Alex Stoffregen in ninth.

Anderson said the girls used their knowledge of the course and their opponents well on the day.

"There were good runners here," Anderson said. "There were a couple from Monrovia near the front. (Alli) Workman from Bloomfield is a good, good runner we've been watching for a couple of years now and there were some strong runners from Northview.

"Corrie played the game today and she did a fine job. Brittany and the others are closing that gap and helping Romer out quite a bit. It was a very nice race."

Cloverdale was led by Laura Worthington in 17th place, one spot better than Clare Plamondon, while Izzy Monnett finished 31st for the Clovers.

Alexandria Land finished 26th for North Putnam, followed by Kylee Detro in 32nd and Claire Dean in 35th.

Greencastle won the boys' race over Northview 38-44. The two schools tied two weeks ago at the Northview Invitational, which the Tiger Cubs won by tiebreaker. Cloverdale finished sixth while North Putnam did not have a team score.

Elijah Brattain, Clayton Wilson and Taylor Secrest finished third, fourth and fifth respectively to help ease the hosts past the Knights. Levi Lewis finished 13th while Braden Pershing finished 15th, followed by Jacob Crawley in 16th.

Anderson added that the boys' squad enjoyed the rolling route on the course and said the younger members of the squad were providing plenty of energy.

"I think our kids like running out here," Anderson said. "Northview is a good competitor and we knew it was going to be tight. Our young men did a fine job.

"I've talked about the freshmen all year but they've come along real well. They've challenged the upper classmen. The upper classmen have accepted it and pushed themselves as well. They're doing well and I'm pleased with them."

Nick Blundell placed 24th to lead the Clovers, with Ethan Maners placing 38th and Clayton Byrd finishing 53rd. Austin Nelson placed 61st, Nolan Manners finished 63rd while Aaron Fulkerson finished 64th.

Michael Roach topped the North Putnam finishers in 44th place, followed by Chase Salyers in 49th place and Avery Gambill in 59th place.

With the WCC race on Tuesday down at South Putnam, Lutes said that the Cougars needed to make the Eagles' course more like their own home for the next couple.

SPHS is also host for the Putnam County race and sectionals.

"I think the kids will do really well," Lutes said. "Hopefully we'll have three more girls for Tuesday after being out sick. The boys have been working on hills since we'll have to run more races there than at our own course. It's our home away from home and hopefully we can run like it is our home course."

Tyler said that squad is coming along nicely as the end of the season approaches.

"We've come along okay," Tyler said. "The injury and flu bugs are still bothering us, even today, but I'm happy with the progress we've made. Hopefully we can have a good showing at the county and conference and move on to sectionals from there."

Anderson said the squads could not get ahead of themselves over the next two weeks.

"We'll take the races one at a time and emphasize them one at a time," Anderson said. "That's how we're going to work. One is on a Saturday morning and the others are in the afternoon.

"We've got to take that into consideration, keep ourselves hydrated and we'll look to start tapering in a week and a half or so."

In the middle school races, Greencastle's girls finished second behind Tuttle Middle School (Crawfordsville), with Cloverdale finishing fourth and North Putnam seventh.

Emma Wilson won the girls race for Greencastle, followed by Seelye Stoffregen in second and Sydney Lewis in fourth for the Tiger Cubs. Cloverdale's Payton Lyons topped the Clover runners in ninth place, followed by North Putnam's highest finisher, Alanna Nunez, who finished 10th.

Greencastle finished third in the boys' race behind Cascade and Bloomfield. Cloverdale finished seventh while North Putnam finished eighth.

Ben Gellman won the race for the Tiger Cubs ahead of Cascade's Ben Shepard. Jackson Kendall finished 14th, followed by Preston Headley in 18th and Tylan Jones in 19th.

Cloverdale was led by Elliot Williamson's 25th place finish. Williamson was followed by North Putnam's top runner, Zach Culberson, in 26th place.

In the elementary school race, Tzouanakis Intermediate School runners bested Cloverdale 17-42.

TZ runners swept the top three with Ian Frank winning the race by nearly 45 seconds over second-place Michael Neiner and third place Kennedy Trigg. Bentley Downing finished fifth, followed by Caleb Walker in sixth and Evan Harris in eighth.

Melina Murray finished fourth for Cloverdale, while Sammy Fox finished seventh, Tiffany Wainscott placed ninth and Ruthie Mann placed 10th.
