The Greencastle Parks and Recreation Department and the American Cancer Society will be hosting the fourth annual PINK Halloween Fun Run on Saturday, Oct. 26. The 5K run will take place at Robe-Ann Park, beginning at shelter house No. 5.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the run starts at 10 a.m. with survivor recognition at 9:30 a.m. The race is free, but donations are accepted and appreciated.

"I had the idea four years ago with a couple of girlfriends before Halloween," race organizer and cancer survivor Rebecka Howard explained. "We wanted to dress up and jog around Greencastle. We got quite a few honks, waves and smiles. After that a few friends wanted us to go again and they wanted to join us. I got to brainstorming and wanted to invite everyone."

Howard noted that since she started jogging to lose weight it has become addictive.

"Its not easy to work out and keep the weight off so I wanted to make being heart healthy fun," Rebecka said. "I went to the Greencastle Parks Department and talked to Rod Weinschenk about doing a free 5K in Greencastle. All 5Ks charge and want money. I wanted mine to be free."

After getting everything in order, the American Cancer Society asked to join Rebecka in her mission to provide a free 5K after the first year to benefit cancer research.

"I had melanoma skin cancer that same summer so I asked if the donations they received could go to the American Cancer Society instead of just breast cancer," Rebecka said. "So to this day the race is still free but if you want to give a donation you can."

Strollers, pets and kids of all ages are welcome to the event. Participants are encouraged to dress up in costumes for the contest, but running shoes must be worn.

"Not everyone can walk or jog the entire 3.1 miles. So the 5K is non competitive and not timed. Go as far as you can and turn around whenever you want," Howard said. "We all start somewhere and everyone who gets out there and tries is a winner.

Costumes must be family appropriate and should not interfere with running. There will also be a costume contest following the race.

After the race this year everyone is encouraged to stick around for door prizes donated by businesses in Greencastle.

T-shirts will be available day of the event for $15 each.

The All-American Karate Academy will also be holding several free will donations for Pink themed classes including Pilates for a Cure on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 8 p.m., which is instructed by Erin Gibbons; Kickboxing for a Cure, which is instructed by Nikki St. Pierre; and Zumba, instructed by Nikki Gilbert, on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 9 a.m.

All proceeds will go toward the American Cancer Society at the Pink Halloween Fun Run.

For more information on getting involved and donating, persons may call Howard at 720-2846.
