Wilson wins middle school cross country state championship

Greencastle seventh-grader Emma Wilson finished the Indiana Middle School Cross Country Championships in first place on Saturday, winning the small school state championship event by nearly 30 seconds.

"I thought she would be the odds-on favorite, but I didn't know she would win by that much," GMS coach C.J. Shields said. "I was really pleased with the team overall. We had a good season and wrapped it up with a good finish at state."

Competing against sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders from around the state, Wilson finished the 3K (1.86 mile) race at 10:55.6, topping runner-up seventh-grader McKenna Cavanaugh (Christian Academy of Indiana) who finished at 11:21.5.

Three Tiger Cubs finished in the top 25 of the girls race, including seventh-grader Seelye Stoffregen (16th, 12:14.5) and seventh-grader Sydney Lewis (25th, 12:23.6), helping GMS to a ninth-place finish in the team results.

Sixth-grader Mika Mozawa came in at 14:07.5, seventh-grader Keeghan McLain at 15:59.8 and sixth-graders MIchiriu Mashimo and Christlynn Jones at 16:38.1 and 17:01.9, respectively.

In the boys' race, eighth-graders Ben Gellman was the top local finisher. He finished 27th in a time of 11:16.6. Eighth-graders Preston Headley (68th, 11:55.4) and Tylan Jones (92nd, 12:10.3) also finished in the top 100.

Eighth-graders Jackson Kendall (12:28.4) and Justin Berish (13:15.9), seventh-grader Donovan Asbell (13:38.6) and sixth-grader Henry Carter (16:19.5) also helped GMS.

Tzouanakis Intermediate School also sent a boys' and girls' team to compete in the elementary race.

The TZ boys finished second with a score of 42, led by Ian Frank, who finished the 2K course in seventh-place overall at 7:57.4.

Michael Neiner was 22nd at 8:43.6 for TZ and Jacob Carter (25th, 8:46.3), Bentley Downing (43rd, 9:32.0), Rudy Hagen (44th, 9:33.2), Kiefer Wilson (49th, 9:42.7) and Evan Harris (58th, 9:56.9) also competeted.

The TZ girls also finished in second place. They had 61 points with Kennedy Trigg place fourth overall for the second-straight year. She came in at 8:31.4.

Savannah Edwards (23rd, 9:47.2), Zoe Weltz (27th, 9:56.4), Chloe Custis (37th, 10:20.3), Mabel Lewis (45th, 10:36.5), Ally Schimpf (47th, 10:40.1) and Elle Patterson (52nd, 10:48.9) also helped TZ to their high finish.

Greencastle followed up its middle school accomplishments on Saturday with wins at the Putnam County meet on Tuesday.
