UPDATE: Fillmore woman dies in SR 240 crash
A Fillmore woman died as a resulted of a single-vehicle accident Monday afternoon on State Road 240 just east of County Road 650 East.
The Putnam County Sheriff's Department responded to the call at 3:41 p.m. after a 2012 Chevrolet Impala ran off the road and into a creek.
According to investigating officer Sgt. Jon Chadd, the vehicle operated by Daniel D. Trivett, 66, Fillmore, was traveling westbound, crossed the eastbound lane and left the roadway on the south side, traveling nearly 750 feet for unknown reasons.
Upon leaving the road, it struck a utility pole, continued westbound in a field where it struck an unoccupied farm truck. After striking the truck, the car proceeded down a hill before striking a creek embankment and coming to rest in the creek.
"The front-seat passenger and the driver were both trapped," the deputy said. "I could tell and I could smell that there was a large fuel leak."
Upon arrival, Chadd determined that the front-seat passenger, Nancy C. Trivett, 66, was deceased as a result of head trauma. Chadd then moved to the driver's side of the vehicle to free her husband who was injured and trapped in the vehicle, but conscious and alert.
"The two back-seat occupants were out when I got there," Chadd said.
With the help of one rear-seat occupant, Chadd was able to break the driver's seat and pull the driver from the vehicle moments before it exploded.
It was also noted that it is believed that the crash occurred due to a medical issue, however blood tests are pending.
Both the driver and one rear passenger, Tiffany A. Byrd, 43, Nashville, were transported to Hendricks County Hospital via Operation Life.
Also responding to the scene were the Greencastle Fire Department, Fillmore Volunteer Fire Department, Best Environmental, the Putnam County Coroner's Office, Curtis Wrecker, Duke Energy and Jefferson Township Fire Department.
