Drug Take Back Event VII another success

Thursday, October 31, 2013

To the Editor:

I would like to personally thank everyone who participated in the Greencastle Police Department's Drug Take Back Event VII held on Saturday, Oct. 26.

I want to thank the Greencastle School Corporation for the use of the Greencastle High School and the parking lot for the event. This four-hour event saw approximately 40 vehicles utilize the site, collecting 15 boxes of medication.

The Greencastle Police Department and the Putnam County Sheriff's Department also had medications dropped off at their agencies ahead of time prior to the event.

In all we collected approximately 258.5 pounds of medication.

In Indiana, during this four-hour event, approximately 11 tons of medications were collected from 85 different sites by 70 different law enforcement agencies across the state.

Once again, Buzzi Unicem USA played a major role in this event. Buzzi Unicem USA was able to destroy all medications that were collected through their large incinerator.

I would like to thank Jim Payne, Bob West, Angela Hiigel and others who assisted in getting all 258.5 pounds of medication destroyed through incineration.

I would like to thank the following people and businesses for their assistance with this event: Russ Hesler and Dan Green with the Greencastle School Corporation, Chief Deputy Tom Helmer with the Putnam County Sheriff's Department, S & W Feed Center for weighing the all the boxes of medication and Mary Williams with her assistance in passing out flyers in the northern part of Putnam County.

This event continues to be needed and well supported by this community and so I hope to continue to be a part of the Drug Take Back Day Program sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Thanks again for helping make Greencastle and Putnam County a safer place to live.

Chief Tom Sutherlin
