North Putnam gets renovation project on track

Friday, November 8, 2013

The North Putnam School Board has decided to move forward on the heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) and renovation project at Roachdale Elementary.

In a special session of the North Putnam School Board Thursday night the board and public heard from Andy Cooper of Johnson Melloh Solutions concerning what the renovation of Roachdale Elementary would entail and what options the corporation has to fix up the school.

The estimated cost for the project would be around $1.935 million for the hard and soft costs, while around $65,000 is the estimated cost for insurance.

The project will be funded through General Obligation (GO) bonds. A GO bond is issued with the belief that the corporation will be able to pay the debt back through taxation. The corporation will be looking to allocate $2 million in the GO bonds to pay for the project.

The corporation will start looking for bids on Dec. 10 and will award bonds to the bidder with the lowest net interest cost. The bond proceeds will be allocated on Dec. 24.

This Roachdale Elementary project will consist of the installation of a new HVAC unit, new plumbing fixtures, water heaters and several other options to help improve the overall look of the elementary school.

This renovation is the first of the four schools in the corporation to be refurbished. The next school on the list for work is Bainbridge Elementary.

The impact of the Roachdale renovation project on taxpayers will be a $0.0128 increase in taxes. This translates to an annual impact of $4.19 on residences with $100,000 assessed value and $22.53 for every 100-acre farm.

More information on this project and others will appear in later issues of that Banner Graphic.
