WEST TERRE HAUTE -- Greencastle forced 31 turnovers and had 19 steals in its 55-36 win against South Vermillion on Wednesday.

The Tiger Cubs (1-1, 0-0 West Central Conference) leveled their after a season-opening loss at the Terre Haute Tip-Off Tournament earlier in the week.

Senior Alex Basile sank a pair of 3s and had 10 deflections for the second consecutive game to start the year. She finished with a game-best 16 points and had four steals, most of them coming when Greencastle expanded into a full court zone trap frustrated the Wildcats.

"She's worked a lot in the offense and her shot looks pretty good right now," GHS coach Bradley Key said. "I'm really pleased with the leadership and the effort Alex Basile is bringing to our team right now."

Basile's fast start to the season is important for the Tiger Cubs, as she joins junior Callan Taylor as one of the team's leaders.

The two were the only true guards with significant varsity experience on Wednesday and their poise showed when they were able to trap and force turnovers while seldom being called for fouls.

South Vermillion had 22 turnovers in the first half and did not attempt a free throw before the break when GHS had a 26-16 lead.

"Callan and Alex did an excellent job of working the other guards tonight," Key said. "We were able to, a lot of the time, get them into bad positions."

Taylor had eight points and seven assists. She and sophomore Allison White both had four steals. White finished with a game-best nine rebounds.

After junior Lauren Bridgewater knocked down a pair of consecutive 3s in the first quarter, the Tiger Cubs struggled getting shots to fall but they build their lead through turnovers solid half court defense.

It slowly expanded throughout the game, with Greencastle outscoring its opponent by four or five points each quarter until the game reached the final 19-point margin.

The Tiger Cubs defense was well ahead of their offense, and they have a few areas to clean up going into next week and the Putnam County Classic.

They shot just 7-for-17 on free throws and at times seamed unsure of when and where to attack the basket.

"I thought tonight we worked out some more kinks and we got a little bit closer to where we want to be," Key said.

Greencastle has one more tune-up before the county tournament gets underway. It plays at Southmont on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
