Putnamville troopers honored for 25 years with department

PUTNAMVILLE -- Five Indiana State Police troopers from the Putnamville District have been recognized for achieving a milestone in their respective careers -- 25 years of service to the department.

Each of the five was a member of the 46th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy that graduated on Nov. 13, 1988.

ISP Superintendent Douglas G. Carter presented awards in the form of certificates and longevity medals to Sgt. Jason Fajt, Sgt. Bradley S. Scully, First Sgt. Jeffrey C. Hearon, Lt. William Myers and Major Todd E. Smith.

Sgt. Fajt is currently assigned to the ISP General Headquarters as the assistant commander of special enforcement and projects.

Fajt is a graduate of Greencastle High School and Vincennes University. After graduation from the ISP Recruit Academy, Fajt was assigned to the Putnamville District where he patrolled Putnam County until his assignment to undercover investigations in 1995.

In 2000, Fajt was reclassified as the ISP criminal investigator for Putnam County. In 2004, he was promoted to sergeant and served four years as an ISP crime scene investigator, and then in 2008 he began serving as the training programs and legislative coordinator until his current assignment that began in 2012. Fajt is a former ISP scuba diver.

He is married with two sons and the family resides in Putnam County.

Sgt. Scully is currently assigned to the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division as the superload coordinator. A Marion County native, Scully graduated from Pike High School and later Indiana State University.

His first assignment was to the former Terre Haute post where he patrolled Parke and Vermillion counties. During his career, Scully has served in many managerial capacities with the department.

He is married, the father of one and the grandfather of two, and the family resides in rural Parke County.

First Sgt. Hearon is currently the district investigative coordinator supervising all criminal investigations within the Putnamville District.

A Marion County native, Hearon is a graduate of Ben Davis High School. After high school, Hearon joined and served four years in the United States Marine Corps and then attended Indiana University-Purdue University.

Upon his graduation from the ISP Recruit Academy, Hearon was assigned to the Indianapolis Post and patrolled Marion County, later transferring to the Putnamville District.

Hearon served 16 years with the ISP SWAT team and is a three-time ISP DUI award winner, previous field training officer and an Indiana Law Enforcement Academy instructor in criminal investigations.

He is married with two daughters and the family resides in rural Hendricks County. In his off time, Hearon serves as a 4-H Horse and Pony volunteer.

Lt. Myers is currently assigned to the Office of Professional Standards at the ISP General Headquarters. A Vigo County native, Myers graduated from Terre Haute South Vigo High School.

Upon his graduation from the ISP Recruit Academy, Myers was assigned to the Lafayette District. He was promoted to corporal in 1994 and transferred to the former Terre Haute post.

Myers was promoted to sergeant in 2003 and assigned to the Training Division, then promoted again in 2006 to his present rank and assigned to command the ISP Recruit Academies until his transfer to the Office of Professional Standards in 2009.

Myers is a recipient of the ISP Firearms "Possible Club" award and the ISP Safe Driving Award for more than one million safe driving miles. He is a graduate of the 233rd session of the FBI National Academy and the 10th session of the Southern Police Institute Command Officer Development Course.

A United States Marine Corps veteran, Myers is married with four children and the grandfather of three grandchildren. The family resides in rural Vigo County.

Major Smith currently serves as chief counsel of the Indiana State Police. A Marion County native, Smith having graduated from Decatur Central High School, then Concordia University, Summa Cum Laude, with a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice. Smith continued his formal education by studying law at the Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis and graduating with the degree of doctor of jurisprudence.

During his State Police tenure and rise through the promotional ranks, Smith served as a road trooper, undercover investigator, U.S. Customs Task Force agent, district investigative commander, legal counsel for the ISP, and deputy superintendent of criminal investigations.

Major Smith is the father of three and resides in Putnam County.
