Chili Throwdown raises $500 for Main Street Greencastle

Representing Main Street Greencastle, organization president Christian Shuck accepts a $501 check from Tavia Pigg. The money was raised by the recent Monon Chili Throwdown, and part of it will go toward replacement bulbs for the Christmas lights the county hangs around courthouse square each holiday season.

On Saturday, Nov. 16, the smell of victory was in the air. Both on the football field and in the Monon Chili Cookoff, Wabash College took home their prizes.

"We had nine contestants enter in the chili competition," Tavia Pigg said of the third annual event.

"There was only one entrant from Wabash, which may have led to his ultimate victory," she chuckled.

Ethan Hollander and Christie Byun, both from Wabash College, entered the competition with their now prize-winning, 23-0 Chorizo Chili, and took home the silver ladle trophy.

Among the other varieties of chili were 3-bean vegetarian, local venison and smoked chiles, southwest chili, Texas red and the marriage of beef and beans.

"It was all a lot of fun, and the weather cooperated for the event," added Pigg. "The event raised $501 to be donated to the Main Street Greencastle organization. We want to thank everyone who participated as contestants and as patrons."

"We were happy to participate. It makes for a fun day all around," Christian Shuck commented. Shuck is the current president of Main Street.

"We will likely take the donation and use it to help the county pay for replacement light bulbs in order to make sure the square is decorated for the holidays this year," he added.

The accompanying first-time event on the property, The Monon Well-Beer for Water, sponsored by the Wabash College students, raised the money needed to build a clean water drinking well in Swaziland. They, too, were excited for their success and appreciated everyone's support.
