CRAWFORDSVILLE -- The Greencastle girls' basketball team entered Tuesday looking to extend its four-game win streak. Instead The Tiger Cubs fell to the sharp-shooting Crawfordsville Athenians, 61-51.

"I'm proud of the way they fought back because we kind of were in a big hole in the third quarter. They could have given up but they did not," GHS head coach Bradley Key said.

Greencastle had no problem solving the Athenian press getting the ball across midcourt smoothly and quickly and usually ending up with a three on two fast break on the other end for a jumper or an easy layup. The Tiger Cubs downfall was they just could not finish, missing 14 shots in the paint.

"We did a good job getting the ball to the middle and then finding some people, but we were not able to convert those baskets early on. They were not falling at first and that hurts but that comes with time," Key said.

The Tiger Cubs defense played well in their 2-3 zone holding the Athenians for sometimes 20 seconds before they attempted a shot. When that shot did come though, it was usually a 3-point attempt by senior Kassidy Bonebrake or senior Mary Greer who shot a combined 7-10 from long range.

"Give credit to Crawfordsville, they knocked down some big shots in the third and fourth quarter. They had two really good guards step up and led them through (Lacey Garrett and Bonebrake)," Key said.

In the first half both teams scored only 38 points combined for a 22-16 Crawfordsville lead. During halftime both coaches must have made some critical adjustments as the teams exploded for 74 points in the second half.

"We had a pretty good first half with our zone, we only allowed 22 points which is good, but in the second half we kind of let some go," Key said.

Leading the scoring for the Tiger Cubs on the night was junior Jessica Lenihan with 16 points on 8-25 shooting. Lenihan also led in rebounding with nine including three offensive.

"Lenihan played outstanding, whenever things get tight we give the ball to her. I thought she played really well actually. We need to do a better job of getting the ball to her," Key said.

Senior Alex Basile led the team in assists with four and tied with sophomore Paige Bragg with three steals.

The Tiger Cubs hope that this loss makes them better going forward. They figured out what they need to work on a they believe that even though right now they sit at 4-2, this season could be special.

"You want every year to win sectional, that our big thing. Right now we just want to get better every day. Tonight was not exactly what we wanted but we saw some good things and a lot of learning points. We will get back to practice tomorrow and continue to get better," Key said.
