DPU set for 1 versus 2 matchup with Wash U

Saturday, November 30, 2013

The last time the DePauw women's basketball team lost at home in a regular season game was more than three years ago when then-No. 7 Washington University beat the Tigers in the Tip-Off tournament on Nov. 21, 2010.

The name of the tournament has since changed, it's now called the Midwest Challenge, but the stakes have only heightened.

No. 1 DePauw takes on No. 2 Washington University on Sunday in an early-season matchup that will test both teams and potentially provide a preview of a future NCAA tournament game.

"The No. 1 and No. 2 teams ... It doesn't get much better than that," DPU junior Emma Ondik said after Saturday's win against Illinois College that put the Tigers in the championship game of their host tournament.

The Midwest Challenge rotates between three schools -- DePauw, Washington and Illinois Wesleyan -- and the Bears beat Illinois Wesleyan 80-63 in game one on Saturday.

Led by 6-foot-1 junior forward Melissa Gilkey, Wash U drew 31 fouls and attempted 43 free throws against Titans.

Gilkey, a second-team preseason all-American, comes into Sunday's game averaging 18.8 points and 8.0 rebounds this season.

No. 1 DPU takes on No. 2 Washington University at 4 p.m. Sunday.
