The garage at the rural Reelsville home of Dave and Tina French sustained heavy damage in a Friday morning fire, but firefighters were able to prevent the blaze from spreading to the living portion of the house.

REELSVILLE -- Local fired departments responded to a reported house fire in Washington Township late Friday morning, containing the blaze to the attached garage and saving a pair of family dogs.

The Reelsville Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 11:23 a.m. to the home of Dave and Tina French at 6142 S. CR 800 West, which is northwest of Reelsville.

Fire units arrived at 11:37 a.m. and were able to quickly knock down visible fire on the outside of the garage and free the two dogs trapped inside.

The fire did not reach the house, with fire personnel containing it to the interior and exterior garage walls.

Investigators determined the fire was caused by an air compressor motor that shorted out on a shelf. Damage was estimated at $10,000.

Other fire departments responding to the scene included Greencastle and Madison Township as well as Operation Life and the Putnam County Sheriff's Department.
