Marquise Moore of Cloverdale named IBCA District 2 Player of the Week

Tuesday, December 24, 2013

Cloverdale junior Marquise Moore was named the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/Subway District 2 player of the week on Monday.

Moore averaged 34.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists in two games during the week spanning from Dec. 16-21.

"I was disappointed with losing Saturday but it felt like a great week," Moore said. "That (recognition) won't change anything. That's just another accomplishment for me. I'm still going to work hard and put in the effort to get better as a player.

"That gives me motivation."

In his first season at Cloverdale, Moore leads the Clovers (7-1, 2-0 West Central) in points, assists and steals.

Moore had 38 points in the Clovers' win on Friday at Monrovia, which pushed the team to its first 7-0 start since 1982.

In Saturday's loss to Tri-West, Moore led the Clovers with 30 points, six rebounds and four steals.

After beginning high school at Decatur Central, Moore's family moved to Cloverdale a couple weeks before school started in August.

He knew about the move for more than a year and was able to play summer ball with his Cloverdale teammates, which helped build bonds and chemistry, both on and off the court.

"The season's been great so far," Moore said. "I got to meet a whole bunch of people. ... I'm enjoying it with my new group of teammates."

Moore said he prefers the fast break style the Clovers have started to instill this season, which allows him to get to the basket for scores, to draw fouls and to kick the ball out to open teammates.

For the season, Moore is now averaging 27.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 3.3 steals and just 1.6 turnovers. He is shooting 49 percent from the field and 53 percent from 3-point range.

Players are selected as IBCA/Subway Players of the Week after being nominated by coaches and media members.

There is a boys' and girls' winner from each of the three districts every week.

"When a player gets an honor ... he can't get that honor without his teammates," Cloverdale coach Pat Rady said. "I think it's an honor for our program and it's also an honor for our team. ... We're happy for him."

Other winners from the week of Dec. 16-21 were Keenan Simmons (Michigan City) and Whitney Jennings (Logansport) from District 1, Kristen Spolyar (Lebanon) from District 2 and Perry Fairrow (Evansville Bosse) and Alicia Wilson (Owen Valley) from District 3.

Other male players dominated from district two include: Jalen Bell, Franklin Central; Malik Bennett, Southport; James Blackmon Jr., Marion; Trevon Bluiett, Park Tudor; Gary Bonds, Scecina; Joey Cardenas, Beech Grove; Ryan Curry, New Palestine; Davone Daniels, Indianapolis Marshall; Mason Degenkolb, Tipton; Grant Evans, Wapahani; Trevor Lockwood, McCutcheon; Trey Lyles, Indianapolis Tech; P.J. Thompson, Brebeuf Jesuit; Brandon Tonsini, Rossville.

The Clovers will be back at practice Friday to begin preparing for the second half of the season, which begins Saturday, Jan. 4 in the Cloverdale Classic against Seymour at noon.
