Area small farm clinic planned for Jan. 9

Sunday, December 29, 2013

Area Purdue Extension agriculture educators will offer an evening program for small farmers on Thursday, Jan. 9. The program will take place from 6-8 pm at Ivy Tech in the Center for Workforce Development, located on 1700 E. Industrial Drive in Terre Haute.

Goals of the clinic are to improve networking among small farm operators, provide information on resources available to small farms and engage small farms in topics of agriculture.

Agriculture is changing, from farm scale to application of technology. In Indiana, one of the largest segments of growth has been with respect to small farms.

An increased interest in agriculture and food systems, interest in supplemental family income and increasing rates of baby boomers looking for post career projects has sparked interest in small farm agriculture.

This clinic will feature six breakout sessions that will allow each person to attend two sessions during the evening following the general session.

Breakout sessions include the following topics and will be presented by area resources: starting a food business, pasture management, backyard poultry, soil science basics, keeping good records and getting started in meat goats. Each participant will be able to select the breakout session he or she finds most useful to their respective operation.

Program fee for the area small farm clinic is $5 per family, a fee that encourages multiple family members to attend. All sessions should be useful to many 4-H families.

Please help us plan program material needs by registering with the Clay County Extension office by Wednesday, Jan. 8. Persons interested can send their registration fee to: Clay County Extension Office, 6656 North State Road 59, Brazil, IN 47834
