Brazil man escapes injury in tree stand fall

Sunday, December 29, 2013

A Brazil man narrowly avoided a 25-foot fall from a tree stand in Morgan County on Saturday.

Ray Winnett, 59, was coming down out of his tree stand after hunting on private property near Greencastle Road in northern Morgan County. As he worked his way down the tree, the upper portion of his climber tree stand slipped, causing him to fall backwards.

Winnett's feet were still connected to the lower foot platform, so instead of falling to the ground, he was left dangling approximately 25 feet off ground. He was not wearing a safety harness.

The man was able to make contact with his stepson, who then called 911.

The Hendricks County Rope Rescue Team was able to lower Mr. Winnett to the ground. He was upside down from his stand for approximately 45 minutes.

He was treated for minor back pain and released at the scene.

The accident is currently being investigated by Indiana Conservation Officer Lance LaBonte.
