PUTNAMVILLLE -- Representatives from the Kentucky Department of Correction (DOC) toured compost and recycling operations at the Putnamville Correctional Facility (PCF) in hopes of emulating similar practices in their agency.

Internal Affairs Capt. Eric Sizemore from Blackburn Correctional Complex in Lexington, Ky., Laura Wesley, a probation/parole officer from Louisville, Zach Schadler, information and technology analyst from Frankfort, Ky., and Tammy Lou Wright, internal policy analyst with victim services in Frankfort, Ky., recently visited the facility to gather information and photos of the Putnamville compost and recycling process.

The individuals are members of the Kentucky DOC Commissioner's Executive Leadership Program and tasked to complete a project on compost and recycling for presentation to the commissioner.

"What stood out was staff. They were receptive, knowledgeable and graciously answered all of our questions," remarked Wright. "Their compassion for offenders and commitment to looking for every way to generate recycling revenue for the facility, was apparent."

Indiana Department of Correction Special Project Manager Michael Callahan and Putnamville Physical Plant staff Mike Riley, Roger Boillard and Robert Dubois led the visitors through the recycling/composting process from beginning to end, relaying problematic and best practices encountered with the facility program.

On behalf of the Kentucky visitors, Wright extended their gratitude to Superintendent Stanley Knight for opening the doors of the facility and welcoming them in, "It was obvious why Putnamville was selected for us to visit ... it was amazing."

Putnamville recycles in excess of 1,098,000 pounds of material each month, averaging $3,000 to $6,000 in monthly compost/recycling revenue.
