Clovers disappointed after wrestling invite
INDIANAPOLIS -- The Cloverdale High school wrestling team made the long trek to Ben Davis High School to compete in the Ben Davis Giant 16 on Saturday. The Clovers ended the day in 12th place.
The Clovers best finisher was junior Max Secrest, who placed third in the 160-pound weight class. In the semifinal Secrest fell to South Putnam's Joe Waters.
Cloverdale's wrestlers were expecting a higher finish and head coach Christian Frye said disappointment came from knowing his team had more ability than it showed.
"(We did not) wrestle to our potential," Frye said.
The Clovers had to forfeit four of the weight classes and that lowered their team score since they could not gain any points in those classes. Several wrestlers were absent from the meet, Frye said.
Though they had small numbers on the roster and in the high school overall, they did not have any worries coming in to this tournament with the bigger schools.
"We wrestle a pretty tough schedule already," Frye said.
While none of the Clovers was perfect, they held their own with each competitor picking up at least one win.
The Clovers look to move past this tough day and get their other wrestlers ready to compete and field a full team.
"Without all of our wrestlers here, and five open spots, 12th really is not all that bad," Frye said.
Jackson Szczerbik (132) and Jake Waycott (138) both placed seventh in his respective class.
Cloverdale returns to the mat on Saturday, Jan. 11 at South Vermillion at 9 a.m.
