The DePauw women's basketball team beat Alma College 70-40.

"We had a longer break than normal," DePauw head coach Kris Huffman said. "The game went well considering that, but we're going to work to get some of that rust off."

The rust showed as DPU struggled to shoot, but the women kept going up and grabbing the ball whenever possible though. The Tigers got 56 rebounds compared to 33 from Alma (0-11).

Senior forward Alison Stephens led the Tigers (9-0) on the glass with 14 rebounds and scored 12 points during the game.

Senior guard Ali Ross got a couple early steals, but the Tigers couldn't make it up with points. During the first half the Tigers shot 36 percent. The women's shooting went downhill from there, shooting at 28 percent in the second half.

"You miss some, you make some," Huffman said. "I tell the girl to keep a short-term memory on the ones they miss and have a long-term on the ones they make."

Huffman switched it up some by putting both guards Emma Ondik and Savannah Trees in at the same. Both women usually run point, but Huffman said it was good to have both in at the same time.

"Both are definitely great scorers," she said.

Huffman said there may be situations when keeping both point guards in the game is necessary, such as if there is foul trouble, so there may be another time for Trees and Ondik to play side by side again.

Trees led the team with 13 points while Ross helped the Tigers out with five assists. Ross also scored eight points, all during the first half.

DePauw's defensive stayed in shape and kept Alma off from scoring during both halves. Alma made 27.5 percent of its shots.

While senior Ann Sarkisian played during the final two minutes of the game, she kept the momentum going scoring final two points.

Mallory Pruett led Alma with 14 points. Erica Hansen had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Morgan Seaberg had two points and two offensive rebounds.

The Tigers play at 5 p.m. Monday against Ithaca (6-1) during the championship game for the Hasbrook Memorial Tournament.

Ithaca beat Hanover (3-6) in the opening game Sunday 77-70.

Hanover faces Alma in the consolation game beginning at 3 p.m.

Alma's Morgan Seaberg boxes out DePauw's Alex Gasaway during the first half on Sunday.
