Primary candidate filing period ends Friday

Time is running out for would-be candidates to file for the May 6 primary election.

The filing deadline is only days away, set for noon on Friday, Feb. 7.

A number of candidates have filed for county office, but at this time only two contested races are set to appear on the ballot.

In the sheriff's race, Sheriff Steve Fenwick is being challenged by Sgt. Craig Sibbitt on the Republican ballot.

Also on the Republican side, incumbent District 2 Commissioner Max Watts, who won the office in a September caucus, will face Ricky Woodall for the seat.

All other Republican candidates for county office currently face no opposition, including incumbents Superior Court Judge Charles "Denny" Bridges, Prosecutor Tim Bookwalter, Surveyor David Penturf, Assessor Nancy Dennis and county councilmen David Fuhrman (District 1), Darrel L. Thomas (District 3) and H. Keith Berry (District 4).

Additionally, Heather Gilbert is seeking the clerk's office, while Tracy Bridges is running for recorder.

No candidate had filed to run for Putnam County Council District 4 as of noon on Tuesday.

No Democrats have filed to run for county office in the primary, but they could still appear on the Nov. 4 general election ballot.

In the races for various township trustee offices, the only contested race is between Republicans Pat McFadden and Dale Monnett in Cloverdale Township.

As of Tuesday, no candidates had filed for the three positions in the Indiana General Assembly that represent Putnam County. These include the District 44 seat of Rep. Jim Baird, the District 24 seat of Sen. Pete Miller and the District 37 seat of Sen. Rod Bray.
