GHS JV falls to Rockville

ROCKVILLE -- The Greencastle JV boys' basketball team fell in a heartbreaker 39-37 to the Rockville Rox on Thursday.

Both teams began the contest in full-court presses, with the Tiger Cubs scoring 5 points late in the first to take a 10-5 lead at the end of one.

Rockville seemed to solve the Tiger Cub pressure in the second quarter, outscoring Greencastle 13-4 to take an 18-14 lead at the break.

The Rox came out of the locker room clicking and quickly opened up a 10-point lead at 25-15. After a Greencastle timeout, the young Tiger Cubs went on a run of their own and only trailed by six after three quarters.

The final quarter turned out to be an exciting one. Rockville continued to maintain a 6- to 7-point lead, answering every basket by Greencastle with one of their own.

Finally, with about three minutes remaining, the constant defensive pressure by GHS forced turnovers, and a Noah Cook steal and deuce tied the game at 37.

Gaining the ball again with 45 ticks left, Greencastle set up for the last shot. Tanner Nicholson drove to the basket, but his shot hit iron. All five Tiger Cubs crashed the glass but Rockville came away with the basketball and scored with 2.6 seconds remaining in the contest.

Greencastle's last-second attempt was thwarted and the Rox were victorious 39-37.

Tyler Rapp of Rockville led all scorers with 18 points and Cook led GHS with 10.

Greencastle (6-6, 4-1 WCC) now prepares for the JV Putnam County Classic. They play Cloverdale in the second game at North Putnam Saturday at approximately 10:30 a.m.
