Northview's size denies Greencastle a road victory

BRAZIL -- The Greencastle Tiger Cubs might not have come away with a victory on the road at Northview in Tuesday's basketball action, but they did come away with some lessons that might be useful down the road.

The Knights used their sizable front line to their advantage in dominating the first quarter on the way to claiming a 61-37 victory over the Tiger Cubs.

The first period proved to be the difference as Northview's senior frontcourt of 6-6 Jim Mace, 6-6 Ethan Whitson and 6-5 Christian Ellis scored 15 of the Knights' 20 points in the opening frame.

Most importantly, however, was that Northview held the Tiger Cubs to 2-of-9 shooting from the field and forced three turnovers while grabbing a 20-5 advantage.

"I thought (Northview) did a really nice job of using the big guys inside and it makes it hard for you to guard them, especially when they put one up high and one down low," Greencastle coach Troy Greenlee said. "We struggled to guard them and then they start hitting shots from the perimeter and that makes it even more difficult."

Greencastle began to adjust to the Knights' interior presence toward the end of the opening stanza as junior Brody Bollman sank a couple of shots.

The second quarter was played nearly even, as Calvin Hughes drained a 3-pointer and 6-4 Lane Winslow tallied all five of his points in the game as Greencastle outscored the Knights 14-13 in the period.

While the Tiger Cubs finally began to hit some shots after a chilly shooting effort in the opening period, the Knights' size in the paint forced Greencastle to the perimeter for much of its offensive production.

Greencastle took 21 of its 48 shots from beyond the arc, hitting just five of them. Hughes hit three of those shots from 3-point range for his nine points.

While Northview was getting a combined 38 points from its starting frontcourt, the Knights really made things difficult for Greencastle when sophomore Quinton Hayes started shooting.

Hayes hit both of his 3-pointers in the third quarter as Northview extended its lead to 48-26. Greencastle answered back with a 3-pointer by Tanner Nicholson, but Hayes added a dagger when he scored off a turnover at the third period buzzer.

"I thought out kids battled and that they played hard. We just got caught up tonight with a poor start and were never really able to recover," Greenlee said.

Northview solidified the victory with a 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter as both teams substituted liberally down the stretch.

Greenlee noted that his team will take some valuable information away from the loss as sectional play begins in two weeks.

"We're going to see teams very similar as far as athleticism and size," Greenlee said of the sectional. "We're going to have to figure out something as far as defending and the other side of it is we have to put the ball in the hole. We didn't have bad shots tonight, they just didn't go in the basket.

"We're at the point of the season where we are getting short on time so we have to figure some things out."

Hughes led the Tiger Cubs with nine points with Nicholson adding six and Brody Bollman adding six.

In the junior varsity contest, the Knights won 28-23 despite 11 points from the Tiger Cubs' Noah Cook and five from Cole Edgar.

Greencastle slips to 7-8 overall and hosts Southmont Friday night at 6 p.m.
