SPENCER -- In the penultimate game of the regular season for Greencastle's boys' basketball squad, the Tiger Cubs sank 10 3-point baskets but could hardly buy a 2-point shot, falling at Owen Valley 59-46.

Greencastle sprinted out of the gates with three threes for a 9-3 lead but did not score again and trailed 10-9 after one quarter of play.

Greencastle head coach Troy Greenlee said that not building a lead after the first quarter was the biggest miss of the night.

"I thought we missed a great opportunity in the first quarter," Greenlee said. "They were missing shots right along with us and I thought we had a great opportunity to get the lead.

"We didn't do it and were down 10-9 at the end of the first quarter. That's where we lost the game in my opinion. They went on a big run after that and we had to play catchup for the rest of the night."

The hosts found their offensive groove and started the second quarter with a 15-0 run that took the game away from the Tiger Cubs, who again scored three threes in the frame.

It wasn't until Anthony Mitchell nailed a long two three minutes into the second half that Greencastle scored anything other than a 3-point basket.

While the Tiger Cubs outscored Owen Valley 14-11 in the third, the 10 point deficit the visitors faced in the final quarter would not be overcome as the Patriots matched Greencastle basket for basket and closed out back-to-back wins over Putnam County schools.

Holden King led the Tiger Cubs with 18 points with Ryan Coble adding 12 and Mitchell chipping in 11.

Greencastle's struggles could be summed up quickly through numbers, though, as the visitors were 10-25 from long range distance but only 6-25 from inside the arc.

The shooting struggles were one thing Greenlee hoped would be sorted out by the time the Tiger Cubs closed the season at North Montgomery at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

"We have to go in with a frame of mind of having nothing to lose," Greenlee said. "We have guys in shooting slumps right now but by Friday hopefully we can get out of that.

"Friday's a big night for us to work out some things and get on the right track for sectional play."
