SAWs looking for work in 2014

Sunday, March 16, 2014

It is estimated that at least 700 people in Putnam County are physically disabled. Often, these citizens cannot make it to the grocery store or doctor's appointments (without the aid of emergency services or friends) because they are trapped within their homes.

The mission of Servants At Work (SAWs), a mission of Greencastle Presbyterian Church, is to combat this problem and to improve accessibility for the handicapped residents of Putnam County.

The program has been in existence for five years and in that time, SAWs has worked with more than 70 clients to build custom ramps, steps, and safety rails.

This service is provided free of charge to qualified recipients.

Handicap ramps cost between $600 and $1,000 to build, which often proves to be too large of a strain on individual households. SAWs can provide such ramps free of charge because the program is funded entirely by grants and private donations and has many volunteers who donate their time.

As SAWs enters its sixth year, organizers are looking for three things: jobs, volunteers and funding.

Do you or someone you know need help with mobility? Would you like to help? If so, do not hesitate to spread the word and to contact SAWs at 653-5713.
