EVAN STEFFY, a fifth-grader at South Putnam Central Elementary, will complete in the Scripps Wabash Valley Spelling Regional Spelling Bee at Terre Haute Sarah Scott Middle School.

Students who qualified from across the Wabash Valley will compete in the competion. The winner will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. later this year.

Evan is the son of Jamie and Debbie Steffy of Cloverdale.


Central Elementary was host to 13 teams for the annual regional M.A.T.H. competition Thursday, Feb. 27.

Area elementary teams that participated were Bainbridge, Roachdale, Fillmore, Tzouanakis and Central.

Tzouanakis was the overall site winner and itsdivision winner with 24 correct responses.

Roachdale and Bainbridge finished first and third, respectively, in their divisions.

The fourth-grade teams from Fillmore and Central tied for first place in their division.


Four Putnam County students have been named to the dean's list for the winter quarter at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. In order to be named to the dean's list, students must earn at least a 3.3 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Local students on the list include:

Sophomore Sam Gould is a mechanical engineering student. He is the son of Tim and Mary Gould of Greencastle.

Junior Jordon Phillips is a software engineering and computer science double major. He is the son of Jeffrey and Janette Phillips of Greencastle

Junior Adam Zigler is a junior applied biology major.

Junior Ryan Zigler is a junior biomedical engineering major.

They are the sons of Rick and Debbie Zigler of Fillmore.
