Letter to the Editor

Annual Putnam Ag Day efforts appreciated

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

To the Editor:

"Agriculture: 365 Sunrises and 7 Billion Mouths to Feed" was the theme celebrated at the 2014 Putnam County Ag Day event Saturday, March 15 where families came together to learn about a farmer's everyday life.

Ag Day kicked off its festivities with an Ag Day Breakfast followed by a short program by Ted McKinney, the new director for the Indiana State Department of Agriculture.

Awards were also presented for Friend of the Farmer, Farm Family of the Year and Putnam County Farm Bureau's Ag Production in the Putnam County Photo Contest.

Immediately following the program was the Mini-Farm Fest, where families participated in hands-on activities, crafts, the opportunity to interact with farm animals, sample milk, popcorn and cheese, view farm equipment and much more.

Our goal of reaching out to teach the people of Putnam County about the importance of agriculture could not have been achieved without the help of our many sponsors and exhibitors, including: McDonald's, Putnam County Community Foundation, Putnam County Farm Bureau Inc., Almost Home, Burger King, Kroger, Putnam Inn, Subway, Farm Credit Mid-America, First Financial Bank, First National Bank, Hoosier Heartland State Bank, North Salem State Bank, Old National Bank, PNC Bank, Tri-County Bank, Putnam County Ag Breakfast Group, Keegan Poe with Chuck the Steer, Cabot Cheese, Red Barn Farms, Master Gardeners, North Putnam FFA, South Putnam FFA and Aquaculture Trailer and Cloverdale FFA.

Also, David Greenberg with sheep shearing, Bugle Valley Elk, Jason Keeney, Ivy Tech, Purdue Extension, Ann Delchambre, S&W Feed, Wright Implement, Humphreys' Outdoor Power Equipment, Bane Equipment, Bob Wehrman, Phyllis Legan, SWCD, Putnam County Fair, Chandler's Fruit and Vegetable Farm, Scobee Meats, POET, Bayless Family Poultry, Indiana Soybean Alliance, Chris Skillern-Tucker/Schneider Realty, Indiana Junior Rodeo Association, Travis Pearl, Emmett Holsapple, Oliver's Dairy Calf and York Automotive and Rolling Meadows Plant Farm, Wes Kendall (pastor of Greencastle Presbyterian Church) for devotions and the Ag Day Planning Committee.

Many thanks also go out to the Banner Graphic and WREB 94.3 for their timely press coverage.
