DePauw coach Martin earns 100th career victory at Oglethorpe

ATLANTA -- DePauw's baseball team jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead Wednesday and never trailed on the way to a 7-5 win at Oglethorpe. The win lifted the Tigers' record to 4-7 and was head coach Jake Martin's 100th career victory. Oglethorpe dropped to 10-11.

The Tigers wasted little time in getting on the board as Pat Lyons led off with a single and Robbie Stein followed with a single. An error on the play allowed Lyons to score and Stein to move to second.

After Zach Starr was hit by a pitch, Brendon Pashia drove in Stein with a single. Jack Thompson reached on an error that loaded the bases and Ryan Allee followed with a single that plated Starr. Connor Einertson wrapped up the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center that brought home Pashia.

The Stormy Petrels scored in the bottom half of the inning as Patrick Kulick hit a solo homer to right.

DePauw countered in the third as Pashia led off with a double and stole third before scoring on Allee's grounder.

Jack Purcell's two-run homer in the fourth and Kerrigan McManigal's run-scoring single in the same inning cut the Tigers' lead to 5-4, but Allee drove in Pashia with a fifth-inning single to make it 6-4.

Oglethorpe loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth and Purcell's fielder's choice scored Vernon Trice, but DePauw reliever Michael Chiaro recorded an inning-ending strikeout.

DePauw's final run came in the ninth as Collin Henry singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a passed ball before scoring on Einertson's sacrifice fly to left.

Jack Peck, who entered in thebottom of the eighth and notched a strikeout, struck out the side in the ninth.

The Tigers totaled 10 hits paced by Stein and Allee with three each and Pashia with two. The Stormy Petrels finished with 11 hits led by two each from Kulick and Frank Sarno.

Pete Stuart recorded the win in relief and improved to 1-3. He struck out five in 2 2/3 innings. Peck earned his second save with four strikeouts in the last 1 1/3 innings. In all, DePauw pitchers struck out 14 Oglethorpe hitters.
