Tigers' lacrosse comeback falls short at Whittier Poets

Whittier, Calif. - Trailing by as many as five goals in the first half, DePauw rallied to tie its contest at Whittier, but the Poets held on for a 12-11 win over the Tigers.

DePauw dropped to 1-4 on the season, while Whittier improved to 4-5.

The Poets scored the game's first two goals and held a 5-1 advantage midway through the first half.

That lead reached 7-2 following Haley Kleine's score with 9:22 remaining in the opening half.

Elizabeth McCracken and Jamie Powell each scored before Carey Kunz and Powell scored within six seconds of one another to make it 7-6 at the intermission.

DePauw's Abigail Snively scored just 26 seconds into the second half to knot the contest at 7-7. The Poets then scored the next three before the Tigers scored three of the game's final four goals.

Powell trimmed the Whittier lead to 12-11 with 7:35 left, but neither team scored the rest of the contest.

Powell led the Tigers with four goals with McCracken chipping in a pair.

Shaina Denny paced Whittier with six scores with Rebekah Delledera and Lilly Baxter each adding a pair.

Whittier held a 32-18 advantage in shots, a 12-10 edge in ground balls and 15-10 in draw controls.

Liz Hawkins recorded 13 saves in goal for the Tigers, while Nicole Yorba totaled 15 for the Poets.

DePauw opens North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Hiram in a 2 p.m. contest.
