DPU women's lacrosse beats Hiram
HIRAM, Ohio DePauw's women's lacrosse team set the tone early, jumping out to an 11-1 lead on the way to a 16-6 win at Hiram in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener for both squads. Play was suspended with 12 minutes remaining due to weather.
DePauw improved to 2-4, while Hiram improved to 3-5.
Maryclaire Heldring and Emilye Denny scored in the opening three minutes before Hiram's Hannah Schaefer countered with 20:12 remaining in the first half, but the Tigers scored the next nine to take an 11-1 advantage. DePauw went to the intermission with a 12-3 lead.
Four straight DePauw goals in the second half lifted the Tigers' lead to 16-3 before the Terriers scored three in the final 5:07 of play.
Denny paced DePauw with six goals, while Elizabeth McCracken and Taylor Summers each added three. McCracken finished with a team-high two assists.
JoLyn Grover led Hiram with three goals and Hannah Schaefer added a pair.
DePauw's Liz Hawkins turned away two shots in goal, while Rebecca Greenhouse saved eight four the Terriers in just under 42 minutes.
The Tigers held a 33-10 advantage in shots, a 27-18 edge in ground balls and a 13-8 margin in draw controls.
DePauw travels to Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday, April 1, for a 6 p.m. NCAC contest.
