DePauw women's lacrosse falls to OWU

DELAWARE, Ohio -- A stretch of seven straight Ohio Wesleyan goals in the first half broke a 2-2 tie and helped the host Battling Bishops to an 18-10 North Coast Athletic Conference women's lacrosse win over DePauw.

The Tigers dropped to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the NCAC, while Ohio Wesleyan improved to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in conference action.

The teams exchanged goals over the opening five minutes as Carey Kunz scored the first two for the Tigers, but the Battling Bishops scored the next seven to take a 9-2 advantage with just over 14 minutes remaining in the first half. Ohio Wesleyan took an 11-5 lead into the intermission.

DePauw closed to within five scores in the opening three minutes of the second half and were still down 15-10 after Maryclaire Heldring's score on Elziabeth McCracken's assist with 10:27 left. The Battling Bishops, however, scored the contest's final three goals for the win.

Kunz paced DePauw with four goals, while McCracken and Nicole Gibson each added two. Meghan Doherty had four goals and three assists for Ohio Wesleyan, while Patricia Ryan also added four scores. Cate Bailey added three goals in the win.

Ohio Wesleyan held a 47-21 advantage in shots and a 20-10 margin in draw controls. DePauw had 28 turnovers to the Bishops' 19 with the hosts picking up 29 ground balls to DePauw's 16.

Liz Hawkins had 17 saves in goal for DePauw, while Jordan Bernstein and Natalie Reddy each had one for Ohio Wesleyan.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, when they host Oberlin at noon on Boswell Field.
