DePauw lacrosse wins thriller at home

Emilye Denny's goal with 2:18 left in the game propelled the Tigers to a thrilling 14-13 victory over Oberlin in Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference showdown.

With the win, DePauw improved to 3-5 on the year and 2-1 in the NCAC, while the Yeowomen dropped to 5-2 overall and 1-2 in NCAC play.

Oberlin took an early lead scoring just two minutes into the contest, but the Tigers would quickly answer when Abigail Snively scored on an assist from Denny. Snively would put DePauw in front with 21:32 left in the half on an assist from Elizabeth McCracken.

The Tigers would be outscored 7-3 over the final 16 minutes of the half and trail the Yeowomen 8-5 at halftime. Taylor Summers scored two goals in the half for DePauw, while Carey Kunz added one goal.

Jamie Powell kicked off the scoring in the second half when she cut the deficit on a free position goal with 27:24 on the clock. The Yeowomen would answer just 12 seconds later when Grace Barlow found the net on an unassisted strike.

DePauw scored four straight goals over the next nine minutes to take a 10-9 lead. Powell, Denny, McCracken and Summers would all score goals for the Tigers, while Kunz and Denny added assists.

The final 15 minutes proved to be a back and forth contest as each team would be unable to maintain a significant lead. Powell scored on a free position shot with 7:39 left to tie the contest at 11-11. Oberlin's Barlow would score two straight goals to extend the Yeowomen lead to 13-11.

With 6:05 remaining in the contest, Powell's unassisted strike cut the deficit to just one and she would tie the game at 13-13 with 4:45 on the clock.

DePauw would secure the victory when Denny found the back of the net on an unassisted shot with 2:18 left in the game.

Oberlin outshot the Tigers by a 32-30 mark and held a 25-24 edge in ground balls. The Yeowomen also secured 20 draw controls to DePauw's eight.

The Tigers were led by Powell who totaled five goals and Denny who added three assists. Liz Hawkins made 11 saves in goal for DePauw. Oberlin was led by Barlow who had 10 goals and Alexa L'Insalata who made eight saves in goal.

DePauw is back in action tomorrow, April 5, when they take on Denison at Blackstock Stadium. This NCAC contest is slated for a noon start.
