DePauw baseball completes sweep of Ohio Wesleyan

Delaware, Ohio- DePauw completed its North Coast Athletic Conference series sweep at Ohio Wesleyan with a pair of wins today as the Tigers took game one by a score of 10-1 and won the nightcap, 12-2.

The Tigers improved to 8-9 on the year and 4-2 in the NCAC, while the Bishops dropped to 5-13 overall and 0-4 in NCAC play.

In the first game, Ohio Wesleyan was first on the scoreboard taking advantage of a hit batter and a throwing error in the second inning. Tyler Flaherty's single drove in the Bishops' lone run.

DePauw broke through in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on three hits all with two outs. Collin Henry singled, Pat Lyons walked and Connor Einertson singled to load the bases for the Tigers. JB McCallum drew a walk forcing in a run, followed by a two-run single from Michael Hartnagel.

Up 3-1, the Tigers broke open the scoring with five runs in the fifth. Zach Starr singled and stole second, followed by a walk by Brendon Pashia. Pashia and Starr advanced on a double steal and were drove in on a two-run single by Ryan Allee. Henry was hit by a pitch and scored with Allee on a double by Einertson. Einertson advanced to third on a groundout by McCallum and scored on a wild pitch.

The Tigers added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 10-1 advantage. Starr led off the sixth with a double and scored on an RBI single by Allee. In the seventh, McCallum doubled to right center and advanced to third on a passed ball. Hartnagel drove in the final Tigers' run on a sacrifice fly to center.

Wyatt Spector (2-3) picked up the win after going six innings and allowing just one hit. Brendan Bolander pitched the seventh, collecting two strikeouts and preserving the one-hitter.

Peter Munger dropped to 1-4 after going four innings and giving up seven runs for the Bishops.

In the nightcap, DePauw jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on three straight singles and a sacrifice fly. Hartnagel started things off with a single to center and he advanced to third on a single by Stein. Starr's single to right scored Hartnagel and moved Stein to third. Pashia's sac fly drove in Stein and gave the Tigers an early advantage.

The Bishops would answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Aaron Caputo. They scored their final run in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Justin Dages that drove in C.J. Tosino.

DePauw continued to dominate at the plate, scoring two runs in the third inning. Pashia's sac fly drove home Stein and Cory Meixner's two-out double drove in Starr. Pashia collected his third RBI in the fifth when he singled through the right side scoring Starr. Pashia stole second and advanced to third on a single by Meixner. Henry's single scored Pashia making the score 6-2.

The Tigers' offense fell silent for the next two innings, but exploded for six runs in the top of the eighth. Henry led off with a double to right and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Grippo. Pinch hitter Lucas Italiano drove in Henry with an RBI single through the right side. McCallum singled and Hartnagel drew a walk to load the bases for DePauw. Stein reached on a fielder's choice that scored pinch runner Reid Pittard from third.

Pashia reached on a fielder's choice with an error allowing McCallum to score from third. Meixner drew a bases loaded walk and Henry reached on an error by the right fielder, allowing Pashia and Starr to score.

Eric Steele (2-0) picked up the win for the Tigers after three innings of work, allowing just one run. Five pitchers combined to finish the game for DePauw, giving up one run over the final six innings.

Greg Hock (0-3) took the loss for Ohio Wesleyan, going seven innings and giving up five earned runs.

Starr led the Tigers with six hits on the day, while Hartnagel added five hits and three RBIs. Allee and Pashia also added three RBIs on the day.

The Tigers outscored the Bishops 39-9 in the four-game sweep and outhit Ohio Wesleyan by a 48-21 mark. DePauw is currently third in the NCAC West Division and their four-game win streak is the longest since 2012.

DePauw is back in action Saturday, April 12, when they host Wabash at Walker Field. This conference rivalry is scheduled for a noon start time.
