The sky cleared just in time Tuesday as Greencastle' boys' and girls' track and field opened its season against Danville. The boys had a good outing but fell short 75-57. The girls started strong and finished well, beating the Warriors 79-53.

"We knew it would be a close one both boys and girls," coach Garry Anderson said. "We didn't know who would run well. The weather played a part."

The Tiger Cubs had a young line-up to match the season and Anderson believes they performed well in the windy atmosphere.

Junior Brittany Welker of Greencastle clears her last hurdle in the 100. She earned first place honors with a time of 17.9. She also won first in the 300 hurdles and was on the first place winning 1600 relay team. (Banner Graphic/JAY LOCKETT)

"We knew we were a young team. We knew we'd have to have an exceptional performance out of them and we did. (Sophomore) Jacob (Sanders) hadn't had any practice with the 100 and he had a great night."

A lot of Greencastle boy's points came from the great discus performance led by senior Tanner Wood with a throw of 131-02. Freshmen Spencer Rhine and Joe January took second and third.

"JT Mathews is another one we'll point out. He didn't even expect to run but he head a great performance," Anderson said. "We have two freshman on the discus team and isn't that nice? We swept them."

Sanders took first in the 400-meter dash with 55.7 followed by sophomore Jacob Kessler. Junior Sedrick Weinschenk tied for first in the 300 hurdles and the 3,200 relay team of senior Isaac Harms, junior Taylor Secrest, freshman Jacob Crawley and Kessler took first place with 8:50.0.

"Many of our bright spots were underclassmen. Despite the weather the meet was a good measuring stick to see places to improve and how much work is ahead of us," Anderson said.

Junior Jessica Lenihan won the only first place victory in the field for the girls with a shot put throw of 40-04.

However the Greencastle relay teams picked up the slack for the Tiger Cubs and efforts of sophomore Corrie Romer in the 400-meter dash, junior Brittany Welker in the 300 hurdles, sophomore Katerina King in the 200-meter dash and senior Megan Haynes in the 3,200 all played a part in the victory as they all took first.

"It was Lenihan's first time throwing and she got 40 feet and we won all three relays. Corrie had a nice night in her 400 and her 4x4," Anderson said. "Our young kids. Wow. They came though today."

The next meet is against Western Boone, scheduled for Thursday at 5 p.m.

  • The high jumper in the photo is Freshman J T Matthews, not Jordan Sanders. Thanks for covering GHS Track & Field

  • Why nothing about the North Putnam - Cloverdale meet the same day??

  • The Spencer Evening World does a better job covering Cloverdale than our own county's newspaper.

  • Maybe you should speak to the Cloverdale coach about submitting the info to the Banner.
