GPD to take part in Drug Take Back

Friday, April 18, 2014

The Greencastle Police Department will be participating once again in the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) Drug Take Back Day event.

It is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Greencastle High School, 910 E. Washington St.

City Police are asking everyone in the community and county to check their medicine cabinets and remove any expired, unused or unwanted prescription or over-the-counter medications and bring them to the collection location on Saturday, April 26 for proper disposal.

"We don't ask any questions or take anyone's name or license information," City Police Chief Tom Sutherlin said. "You merely drive through the parking lot and drop off your unwanted medications and we do the rest."

All medications collected are secured in boxes taped up at the Police Department and then transported to the Buzzi Unicem USA plant to be destroyed in its incinerator.

"Please help clean up our community by getting the word out about this program and making Greencastle and Putnam County a safer place to live," Sutherlin added.

The April 26 event will be the eighth time GPD has participated in Drug Take Back Day. A September 2012 event yielded a high of 422 pounds of drugs with another 400 pounds dropped out in April 2013.

The most recent occasion saw the Putnam County public drop off 258.5 pounds on Oct. 26, 2013.
