DePauw men's lacrosse loses to NCAC rival Wittenberg 5-1

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio- DePauw dropped to 1-5 in North Coast Athletic Conference play after a 17-6 decision against Wittenberg Wednesday afternoon in Springfield, Ohio.

With the win, Wittenberg improved to 10-3 overall and 4-2 in NCAC play, while DePauw lost its fifth conference game and fell to 3-10 overall.

Wittenberg scored the opening two goals before Sam Caravana struck for DePauw on an assist from Robert Lapp with 9:10 remaining in the first. The host Tigers would close the quarter with two more goals to take a 4-1 lead.

Ryan Mauro scored first for DePauw in the second quarter on an unassisted shot with 12:24 on the clock. Wittenberg would follow with two goals of their own to take a 6-2 lead in the second.

Caravana would draw DePauw to within three with 8:17 left in the half on an assist from Grant Skipper. However, Wittenberg would close the half on a 5-0 run, taking a 11-3 lead into the locker room.

Wittenberg dominated the third, scoring all four goals of the quarter and extending their lead to 15-3. Adam Bridges would score for DePauw to open the fourth on an assist from Lapp with 12:05 left in the contest. After a Wittenberg goal, Benton Givens scored a goal on an assist from Richard McGowan, followed by Bridges' unassisted strike to make the score 16-6.

Creighton Stephens scored Wittenberg's final goal to cap off the host Tigers' day.

Wittenberg held a 33-19 edge on ground balls and outshot DePauw 53-20. Both teams won 13 face-offs and were unsuccessful in their man-up opportunities.

Caravana and Bridges led DePauw with two goals each, while Lapp added two assists and Tom Kryspin made 11 saves in goal.

DePauw returns home to host Kenyon Saturday, April 19, for a 3:00 p.m. conference matchup.
