Defensive woes doom DePauw baseball fall to Engineers

Rose-Hulman capitalized on eight DePauw errors to defeat the Tigers, 16-9, Thursday afternoon at Walker Field.

With the loss, DePauw dropped to 12-16 overall, while the Engineers improved to 18-13 on the year.

Rose-Hulman struck first, scoring two runs in the first inning. Donnie Waters doubled to left scoring Andrew Benitez from first.

Waters scored when Brendan Bolander's pickoff attempt went wide of first and sailed down the right field line.

DePauw answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own to cut the Engineers' lead in half.

Robbie Stein singled through the right side and scored on Zach Starr's double to left center.

The Tigers tied up the contest in the bottom of the third on a pair of doubles. Starr doubled down the left field line and came home on Jack Thompson's double to center.

With the score tied at two, the Engineers would explode in the top of the fifth tacking up an eight spot on the Tigers.

In total, Rose-Hulman sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning and benefited from three DePauw errors.

Caleb Kissel delivered the first blow with a three-run triple to right. Patrick Klima finished the inning with a single through the right side, driving in two runs.

Up 10-2, Rose-Hulman continued to light up the scoreboard as they added five runs in the sixth.

The Engineers sent 12 batters to the plate, totaling five hits and benefiting from two errors in the inning.

The Tigers would break through with their own five run inning in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 15-7. Pinch hitter Reid Pittard led off with a single through the right side.

Ryan Grippo reached on an error and Tate Stewart drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Following a fly out by Max Cohen, pinch hitter Lucas Italiano delivered a two-run single down the right field line.

Cory Meixner tripled to center and scored on a throwing error to tally the fifth run of the inning.

Rose-Hulman tallied their final run of the contest in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Klima allowing Josh Hoeing to score from third.

DePauw would close out the scoring by adding a run in the eighth and ninth innings.

In the eighth, Cohen doubled down the right field line and reach third on a fielding error by the right fielder.

Italiano collected his third RBI of the game as his single to center scored Cohen.

In the bottom of the ninth, pinch hitter, Marko Adams singled to center and advanced to second on a passed ball. With two outs Stewart reached on a fielding error allowing Adams to score.

Bolander took the loss for the Tigers after going 4.2 innings, scattering three hits and giving up just one earned run.

Daniel Sutherland improved to 4-1, throwing six innings and giving up three earned runs on 12 hits.

Michael Bush earned his first save of the year, working three innings in relief and allowing one earned run on three hits.

The Tigers will have to bounce back as they host Wittenberg this weekend in a key North Coast Athletic Conference series.

Game one on Saturday is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
