Pair of grand slams lead Tigers' baseball to game one win

With gusty winds blowing out most of the afternoon, DePauw and visiting Anderson combined for 42 runs and 48 hits as the teams split their doubleheader at Walker Field.

DePauw won the opener, 22-7, and the Ravens took the nightcap, 8-5.

The Tigers are now 16-18 on the season, while Anderson is 23-12.

In the opener, DePauw took a 1-0 lead in the first as Cory Meixner drove in Michael Hartnagel with a single up the middle.

The Ravens responded in the top of the second as Ryan McPike singled and moved to second on an error and Kyle Otolski walked before Zeth Tanner's double down the left field line plated McPike.

Otolski scored on a balk and Austin Young laid down a bunt that brought home Tanner.

The lead was short lived as DePauw loaded the bases with a walk and two hit by pitches. Meixner followed with a two-out, grand slam, to left. Connor Einertson made it 6-3 with a homer to right center.

The Ravens knotted the score at 6-6 in the third on pinch-hitter Zack Hufferd's two-run single and Tanner's run-scoring base hit.

DePauw sent 12 batters to the plate in the third as the Tigers scored eight runs.

Ryan Grippo drove in Zach Wade with a single and then scored on Robbie Stein's grounder.

Meixner's single scored Hartnagel and Zach Starr ripped a grand slam to left center. Wade and Grippo each singled with two outs and Hartnagel delivered a base hit that drove in Wade and gave the Tigers a 14-6 lead.

Jeremy Shelmadine's fourth-inning single scored Connor Morris with the Ravens' final run.

The Tigers added four more in the fourth and two each in the fifth and sixth.

DePauw totaled 22 hits with Meixner leading the way with five. Hartnagel, Einertson and Grippo each had three with Wade chipping in a pair.

Meixner drove in seven, while Starr totaled five RBI. Tanner had three of Anderson's nine hits with Shelmandine and McPike each adding a pair.

Nick Horvath improved to 2-1 with the win, while Chandler Farrow dropped to 0-2.

Anderson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game as Shelmadine drove in one with a single before Boston Fields added a two-run single to center.

Hartnagel led off the DePauw first with a single, moved to second on Stein's grounder and to third when Starr flied out to right.

He then scored on a wild pitch.

Hufferd's two-run single and Shelmadine's two-run homer in the second pushed the Ravens' lead to 7-1.

Morris plated Andrew Eiler with a grounder in the third to finish the Anderson scoring.

Einertson and Starr had RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, before Einertson ripped a two-run homer to left in the sixth.

Hartnagel and Einertson each had two of DePauw's eight hits, while Shelmadine had three of Anderson's nine and Jake Zurawski added two.

Lane Hanzel improved to 1-1, while Eric Steele dropped to 2-1.

DePauw returns to action on Saturday, May 3.

It hosts a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader with Oberlin at Noon.
