Cloverdale Elementary School kindergarten teacher Susan Fagg reads to her 25 students recently. The veteran educator has been named the Banner Graphic April Teacher of the Month.

CLOVERDALE -- In three decades an educator has the chance to touch a number of generations.

Cloverdale kindergarten teacher Susan Fagg has had an impact on two generations of at least one local family and is being honored as the Banner Graphic April Teacher of the Month.

"I would like to nominate Mrs. Fagg from Cloverdale Elementary," nominator Kandy Collins wrote. "She is a wonderful teacher to my kindergartner and was also my first-grade teacher when I was in school. She is very kind but has really helped my son develop in school. She is a wonderful teacher and I believe she deserves to win Teacher of the Month."

The field is set for Banner Graphic Putnam County Teacher of the Year competition and all that remains is the voting and the awarding of $1,000 in prizes.

The winning teacher designates a department or program of the school for which the grant is to be used.

The nine nominees for the prize are:

October: Laura Brentlinger, Deer Meadow Primary School
November: Nancy Stinemetz, Bainbridge Elementary School
December: Debra Myers, Roachdale Elementary School
January: Cami Hopper, Tzouanakis Intermediate School

March: James Wade, Cloverdale High School
April: Susan Fagg, Cloverdale Elementary School

Voting for the award will be open from Monday, May 12 through Monday, May 19 and is available online at www.bannergraphic.com.

Fagg said she was proud to have been nominated by a former student and current parent.

"I had a conference with Kandy the other day and I told her how much I appreciated it," Fagg said.

As for Fagg's initial reaction, it was a mix of surprise and joy.

"I was very shocked," she said. "I was surprised, but very happy."

In 30 years with Cloverdale Schools, Fagg has always taught first grade and kindergarten.

"A lot of changes have taken place in education, and some are good," Fagg said.

For example, she has been surprised at the benefits of full-day kindergarten.

"When the said we were going to full day, I thought, 'How am I going to keep them busy?' Now I wonder how we did it all in a half day," Fagg said. "there's so much more they need to know now."

Banner Graphic General Manager Daryl Taylor visited Fagg and her 25 students recently to present the teacher with her award of a $50 gift card.

"I might just have an end of the year fun kind of party for my classroom," Fagg said.

Fagg lives in Clay City with husband Mike. They have an adult daughter, Summer.
