Putnam County Hospital introducing new low-dose CT scan technology

Sunday, May 11, 2014

Putnam County Hospital recently installed GE Healthcare's Optima CT660, an advanced Computed Tomography (CT) system offering lower-radiation dose capabilities and enhanced ease-of-use.

The new PCH equipment will be used in a range of cardiovascular, oncology, neurology, angiography and other procedures. The imaging system will enable PCH physicians to acquire high-quality images to help better diagnose patients, while significantly reducing radiation exposure.

"The benefits of using CT scanning to detect illness and injuries are enormous, yet healthcare providers must be attuned to the amount of radiation that patients receive over their lifetime," PCH Radiology Services Manager Paul Sanders said.

"This innovative upgrade gives our radiologists low-dose, exceptional quality images which enables them to make accurate diagnoses while reducing radiation exposure up to 40 percent," Sanders added.

Additionally, the CT660 is among the world's most energy-efficient Volume CT systems, using about 60 percent less energy than previous-generation scanners.

The Optima CT660 has expanded Putnam County Hospital's capabilities by offering lower doses of radiation and shorter scan times, which is beneficial to all, but it is particularly beneficial to pediatric patients and those who receive multiple scans.

Patients who require frequent follow-up CT scans for chronic conditions can now feel comfortable repeating these tests on a regular basis without increased radiation risk, PCH officials said.

The Optima CT660 has also increased the scope of exams that can now be performed at Putnam County Hospital. Cardiac scoring and lung screening exams will also be offered in the near future.

"Putnam County Hospital's installation of the CT660, a critical tool for advanced diagnostic imaging, is an important offering for the patients we serve as well as its clinicians," radiologist Dr. Joseph Hunt said. "We are proud to support Putnam County Hospital's mission to deliver high-quality diagnostic imaging and exceptional patient care to the local community."
