Volunteers in the local 4-H program are diverse though they are alike in wanting to share their experiences to help develop youth. Whether cake decorating or wood working, volunteers like to share their expertise and knowledge to help teach youth.

Recently, the International Wood Collectors Society and other local volunteers convened at the Putnam County Fairgrounds to host a wood science workshop. Youth had the opportunity to make wooden handles or covers for a screwdriver or tire gauge handle where they learned wood burning for enhanced appearance.

Youth had couple of different wood lathes that they used to make an assortment of tops they could take home. There were several creative tops developed from what started as a rectangular piece of wood. Other areas offered crafts that could be made and painted or stained.

Like many other groups who support the local 4-H program, the International Wood Collectors Society local members have events that raise funds to support 4-H. A silent auction helped raise funds for awards provided to the wood science and woodcraft 4-H projects.

Additionally a sawmill day on Saturday, June 7 at Bob Chastain's near Ladoga is a great chance to select a log and have wood sawn specific for your project. The funds from the wood sold go toward 4-H awards in several west central Indiana counties.

For questions about the sawmill day, persons may contact Mike Black at 719-0388 for directions or other event specifics.

Numerous workshops and events for 4-H will be occurring during the next couple of months. These are a great opportunity to learn life skills and develop other positive relationships, which may help guide youth in career pathways or at a minimum develop successful hobbies.
