History may not repeat, but apparently English and Interdisciplinary do.

And because of that, Greencastle High School again lived up to its legacy of state championship academic teams Saturday, bringing home a pair of titles in the 27th annual Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP) Academic Super Bowl.

In competition at Purdue University, Greencastle claimed top state honors in both English and Interdisciplinary (in which questions from all contest disciplines can be asked). It marks the second consecutive year that GHS has brought home two state titles, again in those same academic areas.

The GHS English team scored a repeat with Saturday's championship, coming in as both defending champions from 2013 and the No. 1-ranked English team in Class 3 after regional competition.

Members of the state championship GHS English team are Hannah Gellman, Kelly Hansen, Lily Spencer and Zach Wilkerson. The English team is coached by GHS teacher Nicole Kempf.

The Greencastle Interdisciplinary team, also defending state champs, was represented Saturday by Hannah Gellman, Beth Ann Hansen, Hailey Johnson and Katie Rose Parsons. It also is coached by Mrs. Kempf.

Greencastle correctly answered 16 questions to rule the Class 3 English competition over Garrett in a tie-breaker and Paoli by three. It also posted 16 correct answers to capture the Interdisciplinary crown by one over Gary Andrean and two over Park Tudor.

The two latest state titles bring Greencastle's all-time total to at least 16 overall, dating back to the first year of competition in 1987.

The North Putnam Interdisciplinary and the Greencastle Social Studies, and Science teams also earned trips to the Class 3 state competition Saturday.

North Putnam finished sixth overall in the interdisciplinary competition, while Greencastle was fifth in social studies and sixth in science.

The Academic Super Bowl theme this year was "Westward Expansion" with many questions having to do with the history of the growing United States.

The competition was divided into six rounds -- social studies, math, English, science, fine arts and interdisciplinary -- with each round consisting of 25 questions.

The finals featured 24 teams, narrowed down from 277 at the start of this year's competition. Greencastle was one of only four schools statewide to send four teams to the competition this year.

More information on the Indiana Academic Super Bowl will be included in a later story. Access to the contest website was unavailable on Sunday.
