South Putnam hosts wet, sloppy county tournament

With most events canceled for the evening, the eyes of Putnam County turned toward South Putnam Tuesday night for the Putnam County Track and Field Tournament

For the second straight year, a new champ was crowned in the boys' half of the meet while the Greencastle girls' squad continued its hold on the track and field summit.

South Putnam's boys' finally got over the hump after a close loss in last year's county race, outlasting Cloverdale and Greencastle 74-64-64-42, with North Putnam finishing fourth.

The Eagles claimed five events on the night, with Wes Riner in the 200-meter dash, Klayton Vittetow in the high jump and Kieffer Vittetow in the 3200-meter run picking up individual wins.

The 400-meter relay team of Riner, Ben Fiest, Lucas Lorian and Timothy Parker picked up first place while the meet finished with a win for the 1600-meter relay squad of Riner, Lorian, Fiest and Klayton Vittetow.

The win was, as South Putnam coach Carl Coons put it, a top-to-bottom squad effort.

"This feels good tonight," Coons said. "The kids ran hard, knew what was at stake and everybody came out to perform tonight. Coach (Nathan) Aker and I noted that everybody made a contribution tonight and that's what we've asked of them as coaches.

"Everybody that was in the meet contributed to this victory. That's what makes it so sweet. We had some kids that really had good evening."

Despite the close finish last season, Coons noted that the squad didn't talk about the outcome and focused on the task at hand.

"Nobody said anything about last year's meet," Coons said. "We were concerned about today being the most important meet of the year and keeping the next meet as being the most important meet of the year.

"We got great senior leadership from Wes Riner, Klayton Vittetow, Ben Fiest and Tyler Nield. Those seniors led and the underclassmen bellied up and did well."

Cloverdale claimed six wins, two of which came through Wade Warren's 110 and 300-meter hurdle victories. Nick Blundell took the 400-meter dash while Evan Monnett outraced teammate Jake Waycott for the win in the 800-meter run.

Chris Moghadam edged teammate Ethan Boyd for the pole vault title while the Clovers also won the 3200-meter relay, made up of the team of Monnett, Blundell, Waycott and Jackson Szczerbik.

Cloverdale head coach Andy Tyler said that the squad needed a few more finishes in the later places to cement their position.

"We performed pretty well for the most part," Tyler said. "We had a few guys that we hoped would finish third or fourth that dropped out or didn't place for us. That hurt us a little bit.

"I was happy with Ethan Boyd for stepping up and getting second in pole vault. Wade Warren performed well in the hurdles and I think tonight was the first time he had broken 16.00 in a meet, so that was big.

"We just need to run some smarter races here and there," Tyler added. "We need to clean a few things up and I think we'll be alright."

Tanner Wood and Isaac Harms notched Greencastle's only two wins of the night, in the discus and 1600-meter run respectively, but the Tiger Cubs added five second place and seven third place finishes to keep pace with Cloverdale.

Greencastle head coach Gary Anderson said the result was not what the team was looking for at the beginning of the night.

"With the boys, we're a little bit disappointed," Anderson said. "I don't think we performed as well as we could. We'll do better on Friday night hopefully.

"It's one of those nights where the boys didn't perform like I wanted them to and hopefully they'll do better Friday."

North Putnam nailed down three wins on the evening through Tucker Lowe in the 100-meter dash, Grant Bryan at shot put and Nick Kaufman at long jump.

While Kaufman's second place finish at high jump was the only one of the night for the Cougars, head coach Greg Barrett felt that the squad still competed well.

"I thought it was a good night for Grant (Bryan) in the conditions," Barrett said. "Having a county champ in the shot put is always nice. Even if it's not the best effort they've had, coming through on top is always nice.

"It was a good night for Tucker (Lowe) as well and I think Coach (Spencer) Haworth is proud of what Tucker did here as well. We got some positives out of this and hopefully we'll come here Friday and do better."

Assistant coach Luke Haworth added, "It's nice that, even when you don't finish first in the meet, a lot of guys run PR's and do the best they have done all season. That's all you can ask for on a night like this."

While the boys' race was tight down to the final event, Greencastle's girls handled the county meet with aplomb, winning eleven events and sailing past the field 108-66.5-38-31.5 over second place South Putnam, followed by Cloverdale and North Putnam.

Katerina King and Alex Stoffregen led the charge for Greencastle with multiple wins on the night. King won the 100 and 200-meter dashes, along with the long jump, while Stoffregen won the 800 and 1600-meter runs.

Other individual winners for the Tiger Cubs' girls Tuesday included Corrie Romer in the 400-meter dash, Allison White at high jump and Jessica Lenihan in the shot put.

King and Stoffregen also anchored the relay squads to victory. King, Bailey Lausee, Erica Hoagland and Sarah Miller won the 400-meter relay, while Stoffregen's squad of Romer, White and Brittany Welker won the 1600-meter relay and Stoffregen's squad of Brittany Love, Katie Haynes and Grace Smith won the 3200-meter relay.

Anderson said things could have been even better had the weather cooperated but noted that Stoffregen and King drove the team onward all night.

"It's too bad that it rained and too bad that it was like this tonight," Anderson said. "They ran as well as they possibly could and I feel sorry for these kids running in this weather.

"We got some great performances out of Alex Stoffregen. She, Kat King and Corrie Romer all had fine nights. Brittany Welker had good PR's in the 100 and 300-hurdles. Overall, it wasn't too bad."

South Putnam picked up four events on the night, two of which came through Ariel Higgins' 100 and 300-meter hurdle wins. Madie Egold added the 3200-meter run and Amanda Barnes won at discus.

Though performances varied, Eagle head coach Brandon Welti said the squad stayed the course throughout the meet.

"We had some mixed results tonight," Welti said. "It seemed if someone didn't do as well in one event, they made up for it in another event.

"The girls did a good job of being mentally tough in the conditions and stayed tough and competed. We're going to change a few things for Friday, though what and where we've yet to decide on."

Cloverdale utilized multiple second and third place finishes to place third in the meet. Bailee Stevens finished second in the 300-meter hurdles, as did Harley Manion in the long jump.

Sam Atwood and Riley Canfield took second and third at pole vault. Laura Worthington picked third place finishes in discus and in the 800-meter run and Gloria Butler did likewise in the 100-meter dash.

Butler, Manion, Atwood and Clare Plamondon finished second in the 400-meter relay while Worthington, Stevens, Manion and Canfield took third in the 1600-meter relay.

Tyler said that multiple PR's and other good results were encouraging to see from the squad.

"We got strong performances from several people," Tyler said. "We got PR's from (Riley) Canfield and (Sam) Atwood at pole vault, which was big.

"Clare Plamondon PR'd in her 3200-meter run and we had other good, solid efforts to go along with that tonight."

Field events provided the bulk of North Putnam's scoring. Kayla Clodfelter secured the Cougars' only win in the pole vault, while Adri Millican and Desire Parks took second and third at shot put and later Bethany Wiatt and Lyndi Parent grabbed second and fifth at discus.

The efforts of the field event participants didn't go unnoticed by North Putnam coach Kevin Lutes.

"Kayla Clodfelter won pole vault for us," Lutes said. "She almost got her best jump of the year and we're very proud of her.

"Shelby Walker got third in the 100-meter hurdles. We got second and third in shot put from Adri Millican and Desire Parks, who did really well. Bethany Wiatt got second at discus and Lyndi Parent got fifth, so the field events went really well for us."

Lutes found out late that the squad would be shorthanded and said he was looking for a full and excited contingent Friday.

"We were missing some key runners for the races today," Lutes said. "Hopefully, we'll fix some things and get everybody some confidence. I'm proud of the kids tonight. They did the best they could and we can't ask for more."
