Vertabel Tweedy York, 82, of Greencastle, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014.

Vertabel was born on March 4, 1932 in Wolcott, Ind., to Henry and Viola Sutton Tweedy.

She was a 1950 graduate of Greencastle High School. She attended grade school at Clinton Center and one year at Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee, Ill.

Vertabel married James A. York in 1951.

She was a long-time member of the Greencastle Church of the Nazarene. During her active years at the church she was a member of the church board, missionary president, Sunday school teacher for children and adult classes.

She was a wonderful wife and mother and spent many hours helping her children with school and 4-H events.

She is survived by her husband James A. York, three sisters, Deloris (Dee) Tweedy Bremner of La Mesa, Calif., Merladene Tweedy CaWood of Muncie, Maurine (Marni) Tweedy Burden of O'Fallen, Mo., her four children and their spouses, Dr. Mark York (Carolyn) of Raytown, Mo., Dr. Robin York Johnson (Max), Ronda York Reeves (Mike) and Eric York (Christian); eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Tweedy and Viola Sutton Tweedy; a brother, Orville Tweedy; two sisters,, Gwendolyn Tweedy Andrews and Virena Tweedy Pruitt; and a daughter, Dawn Adair York.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Pastor Bob Muncie officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from noon until time of services at the funeral home.
