South Putnam hosts WCC Track Tourney

Saturday, May 17, 2014

West Central Conference track was the focus for many Putnam County runners on Friday night. The focus quickly turned to the cold and rain that blanketed the area. The coaches agreed that it affected the runners.

Jessica Lenihan took the blue ribbon in the Shot put with a throw of38-04 for Greencastle. Desire Parks of North Putnam took second with her throw 33-02. (Banner Graphic/JAY LOCKETT)

The Greencastle girls' track team was victorious on the night, taking the conference title. They held off the Monrovia Bulldogs, who fell only 15 points short.

It was vice-versa that described the boys' go-around. Monrovia finished on top of the Tiger Cubs by only 13 points.

It did not fare so well for other Putnam County teams, especially the Cloverdale girls' team and the North Putnam boys' team. Both teams finished last in the groups.

Desire Parks took the second place in the shot put for North Putnam with her throw of 33-02.

South Putnam finished third in both boys' and girls' events. North Putnam girls finished fourth and Cloverdale boys finished fourth. Cascade finished fifth on both sides.

Greencastle girls won eight events. Katerina King was a huge support for her team. She won the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and she helped her team win the 4X100 relay. She also took home the gold medal in the long jump.

"It feels awesome," King said, "This is my sophomore year, so just being with these older girls they're just more competitive. It feels awesome."

This is not Kings first year taking the throne. She also won three events in last year's championship.

King was also named the Banner Graphic athlete of the week this week.

"That is super cool to me," King said, "I've never really been interviewed by the paper before."

Greencastle's Sarah Miller hands off to Katerina King on the last leg of the 4x100 meter relay. They took the blue ribbon in the event with a time of 52.72. The Tiger Cubs also took the blue ribbon in the 3200-meter relay team. King won first place in several individual events including 100 and 200-meter dash. (Banner Graphic/JAY LOCKETT)

King's 4x100 relay team with Baley Lausee, Erica Hoagland and Sarah Miller was very pleased with its performance. They feel their handoff could be a little better, but other than that they have no issues.

"It was a lot harder than I thought," Lausee said. "I had to reach on that handoff."

They are undefeated on the year and also top 10 in the state.

The Greencastle 4x100-meter Relay team of Kat King, Sarah Miller, Erica Hoagland and Baley Lausee posed after its big win in the WCC tournament. They are top 10 in the state and look forward to making headlines during the post season.

Greencastle also won the 800-meter run, 1600-meter run, 4X800-meter relay and shot put.

The Eagles' Ariel Higgins won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.94. She beat Shelby Walker of North Putnam who finished with 17.34. Higgins also won the 300-meter hurdles beating Cloverdale's Bailey Stevens. (Banner Graphic/JAY LOCKETT)

Eagles' junior Ariel Higgins was the spark for her team. She won both the 100 and 300-meter hurdles and finished third in the long jump after winning the preliminaries.

"I think tonight went pretty well," Higgins said, "I was pretty happy with how I ran and my times. I wish I could've given a little more than I did, but I was happy with what I gave. I'm glad my coach is happy with my performances."

South Putnam's Deborah Cheatam clears the 5-00 mark just barely beating out Allison White from Greencastle who also cleared the 5-00 mark. (Banner Graphic/JAY LOCKETT)

The Eagles also won the 3200-meter run (Madie Egold) and girls' high jump (Deborah Cheatham).

"We finished about where we expected," Eagles' coach Brandon Welti said, "Especially with the cold, I'm happy where it went. Ariel Higgins did a great job again. She won the hurdles, both of them. She had a personal best in the three. That was good to see. I thought we were able to bounce back after a disappointment at county."

The Cougars could not secure a victory, but junior Shelby Walker did finish first in the 100-meter hurdle preliminaries.

For the boys it was all over the place. No team had more than four wins (Monrovia, Cascade). South Putnam was the only team with fewer than two wins winning only the 3200-meter run.

"It went really well," Keiffer Viettetow said, "Half way through I made a move and passed the first runner and just went from there."

Vittetow won the only Eagles' event.

Both of Cloverdale's wins came from Wade Warren.

He won both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. He also finished fourth in the high jump. He also participated in the 4X400 meter relays. They finished fourth.

Warren took first place in the 100-meter hurdles with his time of 15.88 for the Clovers. He also won the 300-meter hurdles. (Banner Graphic/JAY LOCKETT)

"Rain kind of made my legs hurt a little bit, so I didn't perform as well as I wanted to in the 4X4," Warren said, "We gave it our best and I think we did pretty good for the conditions."

Warren believes he can go to the state championship in the 300-meter hurdles if everything goes well.

Greencastle won the 4X800 meter relay and freshman Elijah Williams won the boys' shot put.

Nick Kaufman got the highest spot in the long jump for Putnam County schools getting third place with 18-10. He won the high jump for North Putnam with his jump of 5-10. (Banner Graphic/JAY LOCKETT)

Thanks to seniors Nick Kaufman and Grant Bryan, the Cougars won both the high jump and discus.

This was not a night where only experienced competitors win, but the youngsters fought in, as well. King won four first place ribbons only as a sophomore. Williams is only a freshman, Zac Butler (Cascade) won two events as a sophomore and Kiefer Vittetow won as a freshman.
