Ryan Spoonmore was chosen as GHS varsity football coach on Monday night as part of the GCSC monthly board meeting.

Dressed in a dark suit and tie, Spoonmore was supported at the board meeting by his wife Beth, daughter Harper, and their infant son.

Spoonmore was happy to be a part of the Greencastle community.

"Thank you to the board for letting me jump on board here," he told the crowd

Spoonmore replaces Josh Buis, who went 26-6 in three seasons at the helm, including an undefeated regular season in 2012.

Buis resigned in November, citing an inability to give 100 percent to the football program. A lay coach, Buis also serves as the COO of Cloverdale-based Scorpion Window Films.

Despite Buis' success, he expressed concern about dividing his commitments between his family, Scorpion and GHS football.

"It's all coming down to time," Buis told the Banner Graphic at the time, "I love football. It's in my blood. But I can't put my name on something that I'm not giving 100 percent of my time."

Greencastle went 8-2 last year, losing to Tri-West in the first round of sectional.

Spoonmore's acceptance was met with excitement and commendation from other faculty members.

"Coach Spoonmore impressed GHS Principal Russ Hesler and the football search committee with a great combination fo football knowledge and experience, plus a strong commitment to provide an environment of character development for the student-athletes at GHS," Athletic Director Greg Hill praised.

Spoonmore served as varsity assistant football coach and faculty member of the social studies department at Center Grove High School since 2000.

During his time at Center Grove the football team won 5 MIC conference championships, 8 sectional and regional championships, one state runner-up (2000) and one state championship (2008).

Spoonmore will fulfill a similar position at Greencastle, splitting his efforts between teaching social studies and coaching GHS football.

Spoonmore plans to apply the same work ethic in and out of the classroom.

"I cannot wait to get started as the head football coach of the Tiger Cubs. Being successful in football and in life requires us to work hard, be dedicated tot the team and have a selfless attitude by putting teammates and other people first," Spoonmore said.

An informal "Meet the Coach Night" will provide the opportunity for players, parents, fans and interested community members to meet the new coach and his family.

The open house will be held at in the GHS cafeteria at 6.30 p.m. on Thursday, May 22.
