JJ Burns' Whiteland joins Cougar golf three-way meet

Friday, May 30, 2014

As the end of the North Putnam golf season nears a close, the Cougars still continue their journey to making this one of the best seasons in years for NPHS.

The Cougars are ending their last three meets of the year on their home course of Twin Bridges. Taking on a regular scheduled meet against North Vermillion and adding Whiteland to the meet on Tuesday night, the Cougars added another win to their record.

Whiteland was invited to join the meet at the request of Coach Patrick. JJ Burns, a graduate of NPHS in 2009, is coaching the Whiteland golf team this year.

Burns was one of the team members in 2008 when the 9 hole team record of 149 was set, as well as a 9 hole individual record of 34 was set by Patrick Byrd.

One of the goals of the team this year was to break one, or both, of these records.

Danny Smith broke the individual record earlier this season shooting a 33. The elusive 149 record is still out there for the Cougars to beat in the last two meets of the year.

Danny Smith was medalist for the night with a 40.

Freshman Preston Porter was pulled into the meet at the last minute and shot his best score of the season with a 41 and only 15 putts.

Jake Holtze continues to be a strong player for the Cougars by shooting a 42. Jake Smith came in with the winning team score of 44, giving the Cougars a 167 for the night.

Ben Hazelgrove and Austin Judy both struggled throughout the night with getting distance and putts, carding a 46 and 48 respectively.

Whiteland carded a 193 and North Vermillion scored a 208.

The Cougars face Fountain Central on Thursday and will end their season June 2 against South Vermillion.
