Cascade beats Eagles' baseball, moves on

SPEEDWAY--Jake LaBounty of the Covenant Christian Warriors capped off the South Putnam Eagles' baseball season Friday with a 13-0 win and most importantly a no-hitter.

"They pitched well," Eagles' coach Zack Love said, "We just hit it at them. We put the ball in play. We just weren't able to capitalize or string anything together. That's what put us in a tough spot."

Speedway hosts this sectional which the Eagles were in and they made it to the second round after knocking off Monrovia the night before, 11-8.

Joe Waters, Wyatt Neese and Trevor Long all played their final game as an Eagle.

"The seniors are huge," Love said, "They've contributed not just this year but over the last few years at varsity level with their effort, attitude and energy throughout the year. We're definitely going to miss them, but they've left us on a positive note. I feel like we got the program headed in a positive direction.

The Eagles still have a lot to hope for in the season to come. They are made up of a core group of sophomores and juniors. Sophomores Brandon Gierke and Grady McHugh have a lot of potential and junior Jake Schroer is already a solid first baseman.

"The seniors kind of paved the way, but we do have a good, young core," Love said, "We have several contributing sophomores. We've got a big junior class that will be seniors going into next year. I'm optimistic about the future."
