Greencastle woman injured in Monday afternoon accident
A collision at around 4:30 p.m. Monday sent one driver to the hospital and stopped traffic in both directions on U.S. 231 on Greencastle's north side.
Blaine Johnston Hagen, 23, Greencastle, told Greencastle Police Officer Albert Epple she was northbound on U.S. 231 (Jackson Street) in a 1999 Honda Civic. Hagen was stopped at the intersection with Frazier Street, waiting for southbound traffic to clear so she could turn left.
Steven Foster, 67, Greencastle, was also northbound in a 2005 International semi tractor-trailer registered to Midwest Transport.
Foster told Epple he tried to stop when his semi skidded on wet pavement. As the vehicle slid, Foster also attempted to serve left, but clipped the right rear of Hagen's car.
Epple noted that the pavement was wet upon his arrival, having the rainbow effect of light oil on the roadway.
The impact caused extensive damage to the right rear of the car as well as damaging the left front of the truck. Epple estimated damages at $10,000-$25,000.
Hagen was transported to Putnam County Hospital by Operation Life for treatment of her injuries. She suffered cuts and bruises, but no serious injuries. She was released later Monday evening.
Epple was assisted at the scene by Officer Jeff Modlin and Sgt. Terry Eastham, as well as the Greencastle Fire Department, DePauw Public Safety and INDOT.
As authorities investigated and cleaned up the accident, northbound traffic backed up as far as the courthouse square, while southbound traffic was stopped well beyond the railroad viaduct.
