Youth Theatre Workshop to get 'Shakespeared' with 'Macbeth'

Sunday, June 8, 2014

Putnam County Playhouse will conduct its annual "Shakespeared!" Youth Theatre Workshop beginning Monday, June 16.

This year each group will create and perform a version of Shakespeare's "Macbeth."

The middle schoolers, directed by TJ Tincher, will present a more traditional version of the play, while the high school group, directed by program creator Caroline Good, will collaborate on a post-apocalyptic satirical version with the obligatory soundtrack of popular music, chase scenes and cultural references bringing the play's essence to life.

Interested students should be enrolled or entering middle school, high school or just beyond. No audition is required and the workshop is free.

The groups will meet daily for two weeks in the afternoons. The middle school group meets 12:30-2:30 p.m., while the high schoolers meet 3-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday for both weeks.

The workshop will culminate in a final performance at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 28 at the Hazel Day Longden Theatre on Round Barn Road in Greencastle. Tickets will be available at the door.

The workshop is sponsored by Shuee's Mattress and Furniture.

The entire "Shakespeared!" experience is designed to challenge the young player and to demystify the Bard's lively text in a fun and engaging way. In addition to interacting with Shakespeare's text and learning the play, participants will have the opportunity to directly apply instruction in acting technique, movement, voice, improvisation, comedic timing, character development and subtext.

Applications are now available on the Putnam County Playhouse Website at www.putnam-countyplayhouse.com. The deadline is Wednesday, June 11. Click on the Youth Theatre Workshop tab under Current Season to fill out an application.

Meanwhile, the Children's Workshop "Stories Onstage" program for grades 2-5 will be staged from 9:30-11:30 a.m. July 21-25. A culminating performance is set for Friday, July 25 at 7 p.m.

In addition to rehearsing and performing a short play and poems, the youngsters will learn basic acting and vocal skills, stage movement and theatre vocabulary through lively games.

Registration for the Children's Workshop begins July 2.
