PINEHURST, N.C. -- Chad Collins finished day one of the U.S. Open at four shots over par.

The Cloverdale native fired a 74 on the par-70 Pinehurst No. 2, which put him six shots off the lead as of mid-afternoon.

Collins had a round going that could have put him in the thick of contention until a triple-bogey seven on the par-four eighth (his 17th hole of the day) landed him at +5.

However, Collins did rally for a birdie on the par-3 ninth to finish his day at +4.

Collins qualified for the 2014 tournament with a three-stroke win at the sectional qualifier at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.

Back on the PGA Tour fulltime in 2014, Collins has made the cut in eight of 20 events he has entered. He has one top 10 finish and an additional top 25 finish.

Coverage of the 2014 U.S. Open continues through Sunday on ESPN and NBC. Fans can also track Collins' progress online at usopen.com.
