2014 Putnam County Fair queen contestants (Part 2)

The 2014 Putnam County Fair Queen contest is quickly approaching.

The contest will take place on Saturday, July 12 at the Fairgrounds Community Building at 7 p.m.

Contestants will be judged on the basis of beauty, poise and personality, which will be determined in both preliminary personal judging and the public contest.

The winner will represent Putnam County in Miss Indiana State Fair Pageant.

This is the second of two features introducing this year's contestants.

Brittany Birt

Brittany Birt

Brittany Sue Birt, 20, is the daughter of Glen and Paula Birt of Greencastle. She has one sister, 24-year-old Bailey Beaty.

The 2013 South Putnam High School graduate is preparing or her sophomore year at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, where she studies elementary education and equine assisted therapy. She is currently employed at Toney Well Drilling.

Her sponsor is Eitel's Florist.

Brittany is a 10-year member of the Horse and Pony 4-H Club, completing 10 years in horse and pony, beef, foods, sewing and fashion revue.

Her accomplishments and activities have included the Indiana State Fair 4-H Fashion Review formal champion in 2013, State FFA food science champion 2013, Alaska youth mission team, Wabash Valley Big Brother-Big Sister Program, Illinois Barrel Racing Association, varsity basketball, Bethel Baptist Church Children's Ministry teacher and Greencastle Youth League T-ball coach.

Her hobbies and talents include barrel racing, raising cattle and working on the Birt family farm.

Brittany hopes for the chance to return to Putnam County after completing her education.

"I plan to graduate form Saint Mary-of-the Woods with a bachelor's degree in elementary education-mild intervention and equine assisted therapy, return to Putnam County and fulfill my dream of Putnam County, marrying the man of my dreams and continue serving my community," Brittany said.


Ashlyn Clark

Ashlyn Clark

Ashlyn Nicole Clark, 19, of Coatesville, is the daughter of Nickki Clark and Jason and Amy Clark. She has six siblings: Brilye, 9, Boston, 10, Brinlee, 10, Landon, 11, Madison, 20, and Kenzie, 21.

The 2013 North Putnam High School graduate now attends Medtech College, majoring in nursing. She is employed at Exceptional Living Center of Brazil.

Ashlyn's sponsor is Butler's Fertilizer Inc.

A 10-year 4-H member, she was part of the Heritage Lake 4-H Club, in which she served as president. Her projects included swine, goats, scrapbooking and sewing.

Ashlyn's activities have included softball, Elite Cheer and Dance, TSLA, FFA, HOSA, C-Kom, Area 30 Career Center and College Mentors for Kids. As a member of Elite Competition Cheer Team, she received numerous national and first place individual titles. Another accomplishment she is proud of is winning first place class honors with her swine project.

Her hobbies include babysitting, gymnastics, scrapbooking, spending time with family and bonfires with friends. One of her most rewarding interests is working as a certified nursing assistant, in which she interacts with the elderly by caring for them and keeping them company.

Ashlyn looks forward to advancing in her chosen career.

"My future plans are to finish obtaining my registered nurse bachelor's degree," Ashlyn said. "Upon graduation I plan to make a positive impact within my community by working as a registered nurse in a local assisted living facility. After gaining professional experience, I would like to transfer to a local hospital, where I will work in the emergency room department."


Alex Stoffregen

Alexandra Rae Stoffregen, 18, is the daughter of Kori and Stacie Stoffregen of Greencastle. She has one sister, 13-year-old Seelye.

The 2014 Greencastle High School graduate plans to attend Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Before departing to study communications and marketing in the fall, she is working a summer job at Dairy Queen.

Her sponsor is Mark A. Smith, DDS.

In her 10-year 4-H career, Alex participated in wearable sewing and 4-H Fashion Revue for 10 years, foods for seven years, scrapbooking for four years and dabbled in photography, needlework and cake decorating. She was the recipient of several grand champion and reserve grands in both sewing and fashion revue. During her sophomore year, she was champion in free choice and reserve grand overall and represented Putnam County at the Indiana State Fair Fashion Revue, placing first runner-up -- one of the highest awards for Putnam County in fashion revue.

Alex received cumulative honors all four years at GHS. She was a varsity all-conference track and cross country athlete all four years. She participated in several other school activities including FCA, student council, French Club, Spanish Club, art club, pep club, National Honor Society, chair for the National Honor Society Turkey Trot for the homeless, Deer Meadow tutor and was a Rotary Club speech finalist. Alex is a member of Greencastle Christian Church.

She was an Advanced Placement 3D art student this past year, as she has a special interest in 3D arts, with an emphasis in fashion. As a culminating project, she created a fashion portfolio and one of her neck pieces from the collection was displayed at the Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute.

Alex plans to follow in her parents' footsteps at Wartburg College. This fall she will participate on the Wartburg girls' cross country team and pursue track in the spring. As for future plans, Alex would like to become a fashion buyer or be involved in the fashion marketing world.

Mary Jane Scamahorn, her sewing mentor, has been the most influential person in determining her future plans, as sewing in 4-H has helped her discover her love for fashion and the detailed work involved in sewing.


Katie Costin

Katie Costin

Katherine Jo Costin, 19, of Greencastle, is the daughter of Gwen Costin and the late Ron Costin. She has two siblings, 15-year-old Lizzy and 13-year-old Dylan.

The Greencastle High School graduate plans to attend Ivy Tech Community College in the fall. She currently works as a waitress at the Fairway Family Restaurant.

Her sponsor is Cox Electric.

A past 10-year member of 4-H, Katie showed beef cattle all 10 years, showed swine for one year and did black and white photography for three years.

Katie's played basketball for three years and participated in pep club, Spanish Club and SADD.

Her hobbies include 4-H, camping, being on the beach, animal care, listening to music and traveling to different states. Her special talents are creativity, being quick at coming up with good ideas for special gifts and animal and people skills. Katie has a special interest in tree house building into actual live homes.

Katie hopes to obtain a degree to help people in a medical setting.

"I plan to attend Ivy Tech Community College in Greencastle in the fall of this year for imaging sciences and obtain a degree in radiology and ultrasound," Katie said. "My goal is to get my bachelor's degree and find a job at a hospital or a physician's office."
